Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sheffield

For some Sheffield film-screening event news: tomorrow, our friends at the School of Mathematics and Statistics are co-hosting a virtual screening of Secrets of the Surface, a 1-hour documentary about Maryam Mirzakhani, to celebrate International Women in Mathematics Day. It will be taking place at 2pm, but the license will be available until the 19th May.

You can register for a license to watch the film at this link: https://may12.womeninmaths.org/screening-secrets

The department will also be running a Google chat alongside it, to discuss discuss impressions of the film and wider issues around gender bias. You can register for that here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScm_orS5eXX11s_YjxKF6TPMcbPamsZo_Cdq8ttLmy5JCos8Q/viewform?usp=sf_link

For more details email Alex Best ([email protected]), Departmental Director for Equality, Diversity & Inclusion at the School of Mathematics and Statistics

(This is completely open to non-mathematicians!)

On Tuesday, as part of Celebrating Women in Mathematics, we'll be hosting a virtual screening of 'Secrets of the Surface', a documentary about Fields Medallist Maryam Mirzakhani.

Plus, we'll have Dr Alex Best taking over our Twitter account, where he'll be shining a light on gender equality issues in mathematics: twitter.com/mathsatshefuni

University of Sheffield: Guarantee 100% pay for all staff on campus!

Sheffield Students' Union would not function without the work of hundreds of members of casual staff within the university and the SU.

That's why we would like to support the call for the University of Sheffield to use its funds to guarantee 100% pay for all staff on campus. Disappointingly, the Students' Union is unable to guarantee full pay for its furloughed casual staff, meaning that many workers are now set to be paid less than minimum wage while on furlough.

We reject the premise that many casual staff "simply don't need 100 per cent," and there have been several accounts from casual workers at the SU who have been put in a severely weakened position by this 20% cut in wages.

So, we would encourage all of our followers to sign this open letter:
👉 bit.ly/100letter
Sign this to add your voice to the many demanding better for furloughed staff.

Now more than ever we need to be looking out for each other, and we believe it is the responsibility of the University and the Students Union to ensure that its students and workers are not put into an even more vulnerable position in the midst of a global pandemic. All SU, Unicus, and University staff should be paid the full 100% while on furlough, with no exceptions.

Solidarity with all furloughed staff,

What would you want to watch this Saturday evening at Film Unit: Remote?

For this Saturday's Film Unit: Remote, we're putting out a poll for what we'll be watching in our online film club! https://www.strawpoll.me/19713583

Going for some relatively light and easy film options this week, as we've been socially distancing for a while so thinking it might just be nice for everyone to just kick back on the sofa this weekend, and put on a really chill film.

Your choices (all suggested in the feedback form, many thanks!) are:

Legally Blonde (2001) - Directed by Robert Luketic, Written by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, Rated 12

Elle Woods has it all. She’s the president of her sorority, a Hawaiian Tropic girl, Miss June in her campus calendar, and, above all, a natural blonde. She dates the cutest fraternity boy on campus and wants nothing more than to be Mrs. Warner Huntington III. But, there’s just one thing stopping Warner from popping the question: Elle is too blonde.

Someone Great (2019) - Written and Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, Rated 15

An aspiring music journalist lands her dream job and is about to move to San Francisco when her boyfriend of nine years decides to call it quits. To nurse her broken heart, she and her two best friends spend one outrageous last adventure in New York City.

Julie and Julia (2009) - Written and Directed by Nora Ephron, Rated 12

Julia Child and Julie Powell – both of whom wrote memoirs – find their lives intertwined. Though separated by time and space, both women are at loose ends… until they discover that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible.

Vote Now! [Legally Blonde] [Someone Great] [Julie and Julia]

Film Unit: Remote - Feedback

https://forms.gle/p5rvbNKFsqz6sfir8

There won't be a Film Unit: Remote screening this evening, but we'd appreciate it a lot if any of you would be able to fill in this form. This is feedback for Film Unit: Remote (our online film club we've been running for a couple of weeks), and will be really helpful in determining how we run it going forward through the rest of this uncertain time!

Please fill it in whether you've joined in with one already or not, we'd love to hear your ideas 💚💛💜

Also, stay tuned for an event coming up for Saturday's film, as a clue for what it'll be:
I heard you're all staying in your houses? 🎨🕴🏼🔫☘️

Have you been to one of Film Unit's Remote screenings? If so, we'd like to hear from you so we can keep improving it and making it work more effectively. Even if you haven't, if you want to fill in this form to say what has been a barrier, and what you'd like to see Film Unit: Remote involve in futu...

However, it is understandably a very busy period for them so it may take up four weeks until you see your refund. Again, message us if you have any questions. Take care, Film Unit x

So, since the news that your Students' Union would be closing down most physical activity and moving to the Digital World, it's felt like all I've been posting about has either been lots of information or bad news.

I think now is a time to celebrate some of the amazing students we have, and to give some love to some of the brilliant things our committees have done that have put a smile on my face over a difficult few days!

A huge shout out goes out to Film Unit who will not be deterred and have now set up some remote sessions, seriously amazing work!

Another equally large big up to Forge Radio who are now setting up a remote podcast to help us get through the next few weeks, which I can't wait to start listening to!

It's been a tough couple of weeks for Bummit after cancelling their trip to Krakow but being the amazing committee they are, I've seen them encouraging people to get involved in Crookes Mutual Aid group which is great, join this if you haven't already!

Our fantastic UoS Disabled & Dyslexic Students Committee have been sharing key information about self-care and some incredibly helpful posters which let people know if you're in a household which has someone who is in a high risk category - a great idea!

and finally, I just had to give Foundry, Sheffield Students' Union a shout out. They might not have been able to let you through their doors, but they brought over a thousand of you online for self-isolation sessions to groove away to your favourite tunes, so a big shout out to everyone there!

There's no other way of saying this, but our students are the best Sheffield, and there's so much we can all do to help each other through these uncertain times. Look out for each other and keep coming up with these incredible ideas!

I'll share more amazing ideas I've seen from you all soon!

Leeds Queer Film Festival

Our friends over at Leeds Queer Film Festival have sadly had to cancel their event but they have shared this wonderful resource with queer films available on the internet for free! Do go and check it out 🎞💖

It’s a sad day for LQFF as we were launching our festival programme tonight ☹ (it’s cancelled in case you missed that news).

But, fear not queer film fans cos we’ve put together a resource with tons of links to FREE online LGBTQ+ films. Literally hundreds of films; shorts and features, docs, drama, experimental, animation…

Let us know if there’s any free queer films you've found online. We’ll keep updating the list so no chance you’ll run out of films to watch whilst holed up.

Stay safe and happy watching! 🏳️‍🌈🎥

In partnership with the University of Westminster Film Society, we at Cinema for All are hosting a Student and Young Volunteer Cinema Day at the university on the 23rd February. The event’s programme includes three exclusive screenings (A Private War, Border, Vote 100: Born a Rebel) and various group workshops suitable for all aspiring film programmers. A programme of all scheduled events is available to download from our website. The day will be really beneficial to all young film programmers as it includes the chance to meet like-minded individuals in group workshops on networking films and voluntary film programming. The event is primarily aimed at students aged between 18-30 years old but is beneficial to anyone running your student cinema. As Cinema For All is supported by the BFI, we currently have bursaries available to help you attend. If you are interested in a bursary, please contact Ellie on [email protected]. Tickets are only £20 (including all screenings, a light lunch and refreshments). Here is the ticket link and we hope to see you there for a really fun and beneficial day of group activities and workshops.
