Set It Off - Broomhall Community Cinema screening | Tickets For Good

We've been working on the zines that will be given to every audience member at our screening of SET IT OFF this Sunday - and in finding out more about the context of the film, we've grown ever more wowed by it!

It's hard to overstate just *how* unprecedented it was in the mid-90s for a major Hollywood studio to make a film about four black, working class women, one of whom is queer. SET IT OFF helped redefine the kind of stories that mainstream films could tell, and it should be hailed as a classic. You've got to see it!

FILMS OF 2019!

In no particular order beyond the order I watched them in, here are my (me being Sarah; I'm one of the volunteers at Broomhall Cinema, and the person behind all our social media!) favourite films of 2019:

1. THE FAVOURITE - it seems like ages since this came out, because it is ages since it came out (it was released on New Year's Day!). The final act lags a little, but it's so delicious and dark and laugh-out-loud funny. Deserves all the plaudits.

2. THE KINDERGARTEN TEACHER - I know people who *hated* this film... But I loved it! Maggie Gyllenhaal is incredible, I was really pulled in by the subject matter (an adult teacher reacting to perceived child "genius"), and I thought it was so nuanced and even-handed in its depiction of its central character's narrative arc.

3. BOOKSMART - loved it loved it loved it. Joyous, sharp, warm and relatable, beautiful in its pace and timing, and FINALLY giving some representation to teenage LGBTQ characters that isn't just repeating an overworked coming out trajectory, but that offers a lead character who (a) isn't solely defined by their sexuality, but also (b) is negotiating specific problems unique to queer youth. Did I mention that I loved it?

4. MONOS - I left the cinema open-mouthed, asking "how on EARTH did they film this?" A total trip, a bodily experience: intense, visceral, fantastical. A fairytale voyage into the heart of darkness. Incredible score by Mica Levi, too.

5. MARRIAGE STORY - after watching this I just obsessively listened to 'Being Alive' over and over and over whilst meditating balefully.

So, those are my top picks! What about you? And which new(ish) releases would you like us to show at Broomhall Community Cinema?

23/12/2019

I (Sarah, one of the volunteers behind Broomhall Community Cinema) am off for my traditional Christmas cry at It's A Wonderful Life today.

Aside from the immortal The Muppets Christmas Carol, I don't actually like that many Christmas films. This is partly as I have fairly ambivalent feelings about Christmas itself, and partly as I think a lot of festive films (whisper it) aren't really very good. It's A Wonderful Life is a HUGE exception to this rule, though, and always reduces me to a teary wreck.

It's A Wonderful Life is far, far less sentimental than its fuzzy reputation would suggest: I mean, its whole premise is about whether a man who's been slowly ground down by a deeply unjust society will commit suicide or not. Its happy ending is sweet as they get, but it goes through several circles of hell to earn it. James Stewart's performance isn't gee whizz Americana either, but gets genuinely desperate and dark; the bit where he yells 'I don't want to get married – ever – to anyone!' in the face of a frankly terrified Mary always really gets me. And don't get me STARTED on when he shouts at Uncle Billy... An absolute masterpiece from beginning to end (barring the "terrible" (ahem) revelation about what would have happened to Mary if George never existed, which has dated fantastically poorly)

What are your favourite (festive or non-festive) films to watch as the year draws to a close?

An introduction to Broomhall Community Cinema!

We were really chuffed when Ollie Buckley, a freelance journalist from the The University of Sheffield, asked to come to our first film screening so he could do feature on Broomhall Community Cinema. In this short video that Ollie filmed, you can find out all about why we started the cinema up and what our aims for it are. Thanks, Ollie!

A HUGE thank you to everyone who came down to our first screening on Sunday evening! It was such a pleasure to watch Her alongside such a warm, appreciative, and welcoming audience. The Sheffield cinema-going community rock!

Here's a couple of snaps from our post-screening talk about the film; the second shot shows people rating how much they would've wanted to be pals with the central character of Theodore, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Opinions were mixed!

Our next screening takes place on Sunday 19th January, and we'll be announcing details of it very soon. Watch this space!
