Ghouls on Film is a monthly feminist horror film club, showing films that challenge the representations of women within the genre. Expect cult classics, independent releases and rare lesser-known films that explore how women can find agency in the world of horror.

Some very exciting news; I’m beyond delighted to be involved with a fabulous team of programmers as part of the Sparks 25 Programmers initiative run by Belfast Film Festival!

Within the project, I’ll be delivering a screening of the Slavic folklore film Viy (1967) during this year’s festival, on Wednesday 5th November, at 6pm at the Beanbag Cinema. It’s suitably spooky, as a Cossack seminary priest must pray over a beautiful young woman’s coffin for three arduous nights, wracked with guilt and a growing sense that evil is afoot. It has some mind-melding practical effects even by today’s standards, and some fascinating roots in Ukrainian pagan beliefs.

The project aims to deliver a public screening programme catering for underserved areas of the cultural cinema audience in Belfast, and we will be working together over the coming months on some unreal events; so keep your eyes peeled for more things to come down the pipeline!

🔮 Binding Abusive Behaviour – A Ritual 🔮

I first met Laura at the , and I have seen first-hand the impact her magical work has had on the lives of many women. This Sunday, she will be facilitating a cleansing and protection ritual, designed to channel the pain caused by harmful behaviour and create reflection for healing.

This ritual is for you if you are exploring magick for the first time, stretching your occult muscles, or if you just want to channel your energy into a safe and nurturing space. You don’t need to have any experience; just an open mind and respect for other workshop participants.

Tickets are £10/£5 for concessions, and the workshop takes place from 4.30-5.30pm in The Green Room at The Black Box. There are limited spaces, so grab your ticket through the link in our bio!

✨Free event✨

Facilitated by the brilliant Dr Elspeth Vischer, ‘Changing Attitudes in the Archives’ is a screening and discussion space, questioning (mis)representation and erasure of the past. Delving into elements of the Digital Film Archive with a gender-focused lens, Elspeth will draw in aspects of her work with community groups on the Northern Ireland Now Project, that seeks to redress the imbalance of archive materials and work with FLINTA, and other underrepresented groups, to cement their perspectives in our local history.

It’ll be taking place in the Black Box from 3pm; so pop in, say hello, and learn more about archival film work!

Joining us this Sunday, for a visceral musical performance prior to our screening of Companion, is the spellbinding Aoife Wolf.

Hailing from the midlands of Ireland, Aoife Wolf melds searing psych-folk with lyrics that delve deep into uncanny worlds, and she draws influence from the songwriting of Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, PJ Harvey and My Bloody Valentine.

We were privileged to have Aoife co-create a live score for our screening of A Page of Madness back in 2022, and are just as excited to have her playing for us this time around.

Starting us off on 12th October, we are delighted to be joined by Safe Night NI for a creative workshop standing against gender-based violence.

In this workshop, you’ll explore practical tools, share experiences, and engage in collaborative problem-solving exercises aimed at reclaiming safety in nightlife and public spaces.

Led by community activist and psychotherapist, Tanya and Alison, the interactive session will create a space for discussions on victim-blaming, privacy rights in public spaces, and collective strategies that are practical and safe.

Safe Night NI are incredibly passionate and vocal about safety, inclusivity and accessibility in nightlife across the country, and have led initiatives like bystander training; actively responding to the needs of our community.

The Ghouls are back, just in time for spooky season; and this time, we are angry.

On Sunday 12th October, prepare for an afternoon of righteous anger and feminine rage. We are taking over for a series of workshops, screenings, and live music, calling forth the collective outrage we all share around the epidemic of violence against women in Northern Ireland.

70% of all ticket sales will go towards the incredibly important work of Nexus NI and Women’s Aid.

Whilst we are sold out for this Thursday’s screening in collaboration with curatorial maestros , we still put together a tasty little watchlist - so you can fulfill all your 🌞⚔️mediaeval summer ⚔️🌞desires, even if you can’t make it to the Beanbag Cinema.

Daisies (1966) is a film sprung from Czechoslovakian New Wave, but its special brand of aesthetic misandry could just as easily have appeared in the tumblr era. Written and directed by iconic avant-garde pioneer Věra Chytilová, Daisies follows two besties on a journey of absolute whimsy; so much so that its anti-patriarchal narrative led to it being banned upon its release.

Beauty and the Beast (1978) remains to be one of the most horrifying and visually alluring folktale retellings in cinema history. In this version, our beast is part man, part falcon (?!?) which is really only the beginning of its madness. The direct translation of its original Czech title is ‘The Virgin and The Monster’, which might give you an insight into its representations of ‘pure’ girlhood and evil masculinity, but the dramatic costuming and lighting is out of this world.

Santa Sangre (1989) may not originate in the soviet-steeped world that our other films find themselves in, but its magical realism pulls from similar threads. Rich in elaborate circus costumes, biblical references and a hefty dose of violence, approach with care and consider the content warnings if needed. If you haven’t yet delved into the mystical world of director Alejandro Jodorowsky, let this be a sign to begin your filmic divinations (and strap in!).
