Vengeance is timeless.

A grieving firefighter and his hunting buddy dig up a mysterious grave in the woods and unleash a horned creature with a very long memory.

Shot on a $252,000 budget and hurled into video stores just before the millennium, IN THE WOODS is the kind of shot-on-16mm (and then transferred to Digital Betacam for editing), blood-soaked DIY monster movie that only exists because somebody in Kalamazoo, Michigan really wanted it to. DJ Perry (of Knight Chills fame) stars as Alex Kerwood, a fireman haunted by a mother and baby he couldn’t save, whose grief drives a wedge straight through his marriage. Naturally, the solution is a hunting trip with his buddy Wayne, deep into some very unlucky woods, where things quickly spiral when they stumble on, and dig up, a grave with a three-horned skull in it.

Writer/director Lynn Drzick throws practical monster effects, backwoods folklore, and soap-opera marital strife into a big pot and lets it simmer. The results are gnarly, sincere, and completely unconcerned with things like pacing or plausibility. Drzick, a Kalamazoo native, shot the whole thing on his home turf, roping in local landmarks like Henderson Castle and the now-shuttered Portage Pub, and even got the actual Portage Fire Department to set off real explosions for the film’s more volatile scenes.

This is the platonic ideal of a regional creature feature: a film made by people who clearly loved the genre, bankrolled just enough to actually build a monster suit, and abandoned by history until a recent Blu-ray resurrection dragged it back from the void of long-lost Beta SP masters.

We’re screening Drzick’s newly recut director’s edition, restored and expanded straight from that resurrected master with extra monster footage spliced back in — because if there’s one thing this movie needed more of, it’s the guy in the horn suit.

This Spectober, come dig up something you shouldn’t.

Beginning as a photo project, Donal Mosher (one half of the directing team that also includes Michael Palmieri) sought to “…interpret and make visible the place and people I came from,” an exercise that results in a distinctly personal and otherworldly investigation into memory, ghosts, and into the houses, neighborhoods, and families that retain long-past parts of ourselves well after we’ve left.

After years of hard work as a stuntman in TV (Star Trek: Voyager, Columbo, Hill Street Blues) and film (Above the Law, The Nutty Professor, Billy Crystal’s stuntman in the 90s) Peter Horak made his one and only film: Die Hard Dracula. Featuring three actors playing Dracula, bloody SOV makeouts a-la a (slightly) less perverted Donald Farmer, and a lead performance as Dr. Van Helsing by the inimitable Bruce Glover, Die Hard Dracula is a halloween treat you should indulge in every year.

The October 5th features a Q&A with the film’s producer Mark Morris, who’s also known as one of Andy Sidaris’ choice cinematographers.

OUR YEARLY HORROR MARATHON: BEST OF SPECTACLE EDITION

This year marks the fifteenth year of this beloved Spectacle tradition, so we wanted to celebrate by doing something nearly as crazy as the movies Shriek Show has inflicted upon audiences over the years: a three-day Shriek Show marathon, playing one film from every previous edition. Mark and Zach have each delved back into their respective years to pick a favorite from every edition they programmed, and where possible we’ve dug up the original program text that accompanied each film when it first screened.

Fourteen years of regional oddities, shot-on-video nightmares, forgotten slashers, supernatural freakouts, bargain-bin monsters, and movies that probably should never have existed in the first place, dragged back onto the big screen for one long Halloween weekend.

We kick things off at 7 PM on Friday, October 30th with the very first film ever screened at Shriek Show, before working our way (almost) chronologically through fourteen years of the marathon.

Another entry in this year’s Shriek Shows XIII lineup that almost never was – ###XX ###### ###X ######X XX ###X was made in 1995, edited in 2005, finished in 2009, and not released until 2012. Clocking in at just over an hour, ###XX ###### ###X ######X XX ###X doesn’t waste any time getting to the bleeding heart of the matter. Although it’s often compared to 1977’s HOUSE or described as “the Japanese EVIL DEAD,” the film manages to subvert all expectations and take viewers on a ride unlike anything they’ve ever seen. Truly one of a kind.

Eventually we all must pass through the…ALIEN ZONE

A delightfully macabre entry in the age old tradition of horror anthologies and one of the first directed entirely by a woman. For what would be her directorial feature film debut, TV veteran Sharron Miller recruited broadcasting undergrads at Oklahoma State University with a modest budget of $685,000 and shot entirely within the rural state.

The overarching narrative linking these tales of terror consist of cheating fail-husband Talmudge (John Ericson) and his encounter with an ominous mortician and his mansion full of deceased bodies. The Mortician (Ivor Francis) begins to give insight into each corpse’s demise, resulting in stories full of anxieties around voyeuristic sa**sm, obsessive competition and most frightening of all… noisy children.

Those who haunt the hall of Spectacle invite you to bring your trick or treat spirit this Spectober for one of the grindhouse era’s most atmospheric and morbid gems.
