GRIPPED BY HYSTERIA: ISHMAEL BERNAL x3

Featuring A SPECK IN THE WATER (1976), TISOY! (1977), and HIMALA (1982).

While the brutal dictatorship and resulting censorship of the Philippines’ Ferdinand Marcos regime ought to have smothered the country’s film industry throughout the 1970s and 80s, it wound up producing what is now referred to as The Second Golden Age of Philippines Cinema. The country was lucky enough to have a libertarian-inclined censorship office head, and most of the boundary-pushing films of that era did well enough financially and critically to allow for the Marcos regime to accept a certain amount of cinematic criticism. Nevertheless, it still wouldn’t have been called a Golden Age without directors such as Lino Brocka, Kidlat Tahimik, and Mike De Leon all managing to push boundaries via their own forms of melodrama, docufiction, social realism, and more.

Despite being considered the second-most important Filipino director after Brocka in his home country, the work of Second Golden Age director Ishmael Bernal has not been screened as often abroad in recent years, in part due to print scarcity. Notorious for his sharp wit, the openly gay Bernal was a subversive ironist and a committed feminist. His films frequently used the roles of women to skewer what he saw as a sick society under the Marcos regime, best summed up by a line from his provocatively-titled essay Why The Martial Law Will Affect Your S*x Life: “Here we are, being practically ruled by a stranger who shall parade the chills and fevers of his ego and what are we going to do about it? We are going to be gripped by hysteria, that’s what.” This attitude culminated in the consensus pick for his masterpiece, Himala (1982), a study of the blind faith of the Philippines and the grip of hysteria that comes with it – it has only been vindicated with the country’s election of another Ferdinand Marcos to the Presidency. Bernal has subsequently remained a touchstone for the two key figures from the subsequent Third Golden Age: Spectacle favorites Lav Diaz and Raya Martin.

THREE BY JOHN HAYES

Born into a working-class Irish-American family in New York, John Hayes’ career in movies began with the short film “The Kiss” (1958), a chronicle of loneliness and frustration in the big city that earned him an Academy Award nomination. This would prove to be Hayes’ first and last flirtation with the mainstream of American cinema, as he quickly headed for the depths of the B-movie gutter to get his start directing features. This series focuses on the s*xploitation films on which Hayes built his modest reputation as a purveyor of artful trash.

THE ROTTEN APPLE (aka FIVE MINUTES TO LOVE)
Dir. John Hayes, 1963.
US. 80 min.
In English.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 – 10 PM
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 – 10 PM
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 – MIDNIGHT
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 – 7:30 PM

This gloriously no-budget melodrama was the last of three films Hayes made with Rue McClanahan, before her refusal of his offer of marriage brought their collaboration to a close. The film follows strait-laced newlyweds who happen upon a junkyard in Nowheresville, USA after their car breaks down.

THE HANG-UP
Dir. John Hayes, 1969.

In English.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5 – 10 PM
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 – 7:30 PM
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 – 10 PM
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 – MIDNIGHT

It would be a crime to give away the brilliant bait-and-switch that opens The Hang-Up, so suffice to say that it quickly establishes the world of betrayals, con games and role reversals that Hayes’ film moves through.
After hard-nosed, q***r-hating vice cop Walsh raids a brothel, he offers to help young s*x worker Angel get back on her feet. It doesn’t take long before his paternal instincts turn to lust.

CW: this film contains a graphic scene of s*xual assault. Viewer discretion is advised.

A psychological interpretation of the opera mixing in references to the history of Germany, Wagner’s life, German literature and philosophy. The action is centered on Wagner’s death mask. Syberberg’s version was made on the one hundredth anniversary of the opera’s first performance at Bayreuth in 1882. As in his earlier films, Syberberg shot his Parsifal completely in-studio.

TOMORROW... YOUR LAST CHANCE...

NOSTOS: THE RETURN
(NOSTOS: IL RITORNO)
Dir. Franco Piavoli, 1989
Italy. 87 min.
In a fictional language with no subtitles.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 28 – 7:30 PM

Sing in me, Muse, and through me tell the story
of that man skilled in all ways of contending,
the wanderer, harried for years on end
—Robert Fitzgerald

Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns
driven time and again off course
—Robert Fagles

Tell me about a complicated man.
Muse, tell me how he wandered and was lost
—Emily Wilson

For millennia, interlocutors have found diverse ways to interpret The Odyssey. Franco Piavoli’s version of the Homeric epic (his first fiction feature) translates its poetry through purely cinematic terms. The film forsakes literal intelligibility, its scant dialogue delivered in a conlang patois of dead languages, all unsubtitled. Piavoli takes for granted that we all know the story of Odysseus’ long journey home, even if we only recognize the broad strokes from its inescapable osmosis into popular culture. The movie’s episodes freely remix elements of the poem, its characters and events recalling rather than directly adapting the text, evoking the questing protagonist’s jumbled memory.

Piavoli aimed to create symphonic cinema, to express the timeless tale through vivid sensory experiences—the wine-dark sea, the terror of nature, the dread of war trauma, and above all else, the stubborn ache of homesickness. He conveys the myth in human terms while losing none of its wonder.

With a certain other adaptation of The Odyssey doing reasonably well around the world, Spectacle is thrilled to present this offbeat alternative to the blockbuster. Seldom screened and absolutely indelible, NOSTOS is not to be missed.

See – Vampires! Demons! Ghouls! And Satan Himself!

The monsters of the world gather at a one-of-a-kind gathering. Who will attend and what kind of carnage will break out?

Dr. Craymoor (co-writer Thomas V. Powers, doing his best hammy public-access-Vincent Price) is a paranormal talk show host who dabbles in the dark arts in pursuit of fame and riches. We’ll refrain from spoiling the (surprisingly convoluted) plot, but it involves, among other things, a Vietnam vet turned werewolf, a half-man half-amphibian who escapes from a carnival sideshow, and the disciples of a centuries old blood cult called the ‘Sons of Jeramin’.

Not released until the early 2000s and shot in the mid-90s on whatever money one-shot filmmaker Gary Griffith could scrape together (including cash from selling his own comic book collection), SATAN’S MENAGERIE approximates the feeling of channel surfing through B-movies late at night while in the grip of a severe fever.

(DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER)⁣
Dir. Joachim Herz, 1964⁣
East Germany. 101 min.⁣
In German with English subtitles.⁣

SATURDAY, AUGUST 29 – 10 PM⁣

In order to escape her narrow and restrictive life, Senta, the daughter of a rich shipowner, seeks refuge in her fantasies and dreams. In this realm of imagination, a bold and restless sea captain appears to her—the Flying Dutchman—who is cursed to wander the seas forever. In her obsessive dreams, Senta frees this man through her love for him.⁣

“The only East German film to include elements of horror and vampire genres, The Flying Dutchman was the first complete Wagner opera ever made on film. The script clearly separated the real from the imaginary; in the original 35mm format, this was reflected visually by changing the image size—from Academy ratio for reality, to wide-screen for fantasy. The film was produced with a groundbreaking 4-channel magnetic soundtrack.” – DEFA Film Library

WARNING: This film contains sequences of intense strobe effects.

One year after our EZTV series, we return to the hallowed video gallery with the first shot-on-video feature by Ken Camp (MANTRA), a monumental work of narrative video art and q***r horror, following the Los Angeles Freeway Killer (Leonard Lumpkin) as he stalks the desert highways between L.A. and Las Vegas in search of his next victim.

Camp once remarked that if film is a screen between ourselves and the world around us, then video is a window: A thesis which HIGHWAY HYPNOSIS takes to its extreme. In lieu of a traditional narrative, the film is mainly structured around the Killer’s silent, trancelike drives. Camp’s camera takes in countless real-life motorists, pedestrians, and passersby, all with the unsettling undercurrent that any one of them could end up a victim. As the film progresses, these drives are punctuated by acts of s*x and violence that push the viewer to the fringes of the Killer’s impenetrable psychology, into “the frightening zone where lay the genetic codes and memories that make us all killers.”

Indigenous Activism on the Northern Frontier

iara lee’s newest feature focuses on an under-the-radar Indigenous group found in Russia and Lapland, the Sami people. With a long lineage of resisting colonial adversaries, lee uses her own experience of demonstrating art as a means of asserting independence. With various examples from hip-hop to traditional folk music to the annals of work displayed in the Sami Centre for Contemporary Art, THE SAMI SONG OF SURVIVAL rings loud and true for all those looking to vent over the growing fascist evil empires through art and song.
