We’re doing summer theater escapism BAM style, with arthouse spins on the space saga, time travel, technology run amok, and visitors from another world. Featuring films by Jean-Luc Godard, Andrei Tarkovsky, Chris Marker, John Akomfrah, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Wong Kar-wai, David Cronenberg, Andrzej Żuławski, and more—come beat the heat with some high-art genre flicks.

Summer in Japan | Aug 14—20

Wind rustling grass in the countryside, a sweltering heat wave ravaging sprawling Tokyo, waves crashing on the shore in Okinawa. Japanese cinema has always had a special affinity for the floating time, exuberant joy, and quiet melancholy of the summer. This series gathers together Japanese summer films spanning seven decades and many of the greatest filmmakers in the nation’s history. From postwar masters (Kurosawa, Ozu) to New Wave iconoclasts (Oshima), ‘80s upstarts (Somai, Obayashi, and Morita), ‘90s icons (Kitano, Iwai, and Aoyama), and contemporary auteurs (Hosoda and Matsumoto), behold the beauty and sadness of the summer.

See it at BAM: I Want Your S*x

The latest from New Q***r Cinema pioneer Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin, The Doom Generation, White Bird in a Blizzard), I Want Your S*x follows Elliot, a kind-hearted if unmotivated twentysomething (Hoffman), whose fantasies quickly come true when he lands a job with renowned artist and provocateur Erika Tracy (Wilde). When Erika breaks down office boundaries and takes young Elliot on as her sexual muse and subordinate, their sexually charged relationship makes him question his own desires, boundaries, and relationships with his uptight girlfriend (Charli XCX) and repressed roommate (Wonders). As the stakes heighten and power dynamics shift, the lines between satire, romantic comedy, mystery, and murder blur through the colorful and edgy visual language for which Araki is best known.

Rites of Cinema: the Films of António Reis & Margarida Cordeiro | Aug 7—13

The beautiful, haunting, and highly influential work of António Reis and Margarida Cordeiro arrives at BAM in gorgeous new restorations by Cinemateca Portuguesa—after years of being difficult to access. Reis, a collaborator with Portuguese filmmaking legends like Manuel de Oliveira, Paulo Rocha, and practicing psychiatrist Cordeiro, made a small body of singular films focused on life in rural, agrarian north east Portugal, the Trás-os-Montes (literally, “behind the mountains”). Highly regarded by a generation of filmmakers like Pedro Costa, Reis’s student in university, these pieces of pure cinema are widely available in the US for the first time. They screen alongside work Reis contributed to prior to directing, plus a selection of films influenced by the Portuguese director duo’s potent oeuvre.

Hired to inject fresh blood into the threadbare Camp Miasma slasher-film franchise, ambitious young q***r director Kris (Hannah Einbinder, of Hacks) sets out to cast Billy Presley (Gillian Anderson), the now reclusive actress who played the “final girl” in the film that launched the series. But when the two begin to work together, the connection sparks desire, fear, and delirium. Written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun (We’re All Going to the World's Fair, I Saw the TV Glow), Teenage S*x and Death at Camp Miasma opened the Un Certain Regard section at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Q***r Palm. According to Time magazine, “Schoenbrun’s delirious third film is their most accomplished, most persuasive and most playful movie yet.”

Janus Films and Criterion restored Welcome II The Terrordome’ in 2K. The film's re-release begins this week at BAM in New York.

A film that was decades ahead of its time returns to the big screen in a new restoration.

Ngozi Onwurah's Welcome II the Terrordome was the first theatrically distributed British feature directed by a Black woman, yet it was largely overlooked when it premiered more than 30 years ago. Today, its bold Afrofuturist vision, unflinching political commentary, and stunning genre filmmaking feel more urgent and relevant than ever.

Set in a dystopian future where Black communities have been confined to the Terrordome, the film draws powerful connections between the legacy of slavery and contemporary police violence, creating a visionary work that's as provocative as it is unforgettable.
