The word also carries the spirit of the experimental: work whose form, appearance, and direction remain in motion.

This month’s Labocine issue brings together all kinds of experiments on screen, celebrating our festival season and Trait #3 of the Science New Wave Manifesto: “Experiments Become Cinema.”

"A Hundred-Headed Dragon" directed by
Samuel Delgado & Helena Girón.

In the Garden of Hesperides, a fruit, capable of granting immortality to whoever ate it, once grew. This garden, located somewhere off the coast of West Africa, was guarded by a dragon with one hundred heads. Through the use of bio-sonification of banana trees, a monoculture crop in the Canary Islands, we discover a tale of eternal life where this mythical garden used to exist.

The Science New Wave Festival, presented by Labocine, is an annual celebration of science cinema. Each year it presents the latest crop of films from around the world—works that boldly experiment with form and style, redefining how science is seen and told on screen.

This year’s films ask how we see, remember, and inhabit a changing world. Moving between forests and oceans, archives and laboratories, they trace connections among human lives, other species, and the technologies we create. Across documentary, fiction, animation, and experiments with image and sound, filmmakers make scientific inquiry personal, sensory, and open to the unexpected.

The eternal ice is melting. The glaciers are crying, they vanish in front of our eyes. Heavy machinery is trying to conserve the last blocks of ice by covering them with fabric. A robot Sisyphos coming to an halt. Where are the humans? Created as part of an multimedia installation for Tidal Artshow in Laax, Switzerland 2025.
