Our film for May is a powerful drama about adoption, and a young man's need to find his birth family and understand his roots – in India.
Lion is intelligent, avoids sentimental clichés,
and packs a devastating punch, with superb performances from Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman, and the astonishing Sunny Parwar as the five-year-old Indian child living hand-to-mouth on the streets of Kolkata.

Our last film of 2024 is that smash hit Wonka.– the Telegraph called it "one of the best times you’ll have in the cinema this year" – and it's quick-witted, visually stunning, with a Who's Who of British comedy actors right down to the smallest parts (Hugh Grant, I'm looking at you) and even has some clever song-and-dance numbers (this Wonka is a showman).

It tells the story of Roald Dahl's famous chocolatier from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, fighting the vested interests of Big Chocolate in his efforts to bring his confections to the world. What makes this film is a sly streak of surrealism ("why do you smell of giraffe?") super-sharp characterisation, and an edge of satire that balances the charm. One critic traced these ingredients all the way back through Python to the Goon Show.
"Wonka is an effervescent pleasure – an endlessly, intricately charming treasure trove of a movie" – Guardian

Dear Iffley Film night goers
Showing on Tuesday, 8th October, is La Strada ("The Road"). A true classic, funny and heartrending by turns, with an almost operatic power. Its heroine Gelsomina is a simple, poor girl sold by her mother to the brutal Zampanò, who tours the dusty town squares of post-war Italy with a 'strongman' act. He trains her as his assistant, playing a trumpet and a drum; they split up, reunite, join a circus, and meet The Fool, who will inevitably come between them...
