WE’RE BACK!

Our holidays are over and we’re refreshed and ready for a week packed with movies, music and more. Here’s what’s happening at the Star & Shadow this week (31/08–06/09). Full programme via the link here www.starand shadow.org.uk

WEDNESDAY sees the return of TWILIGHT CAFÉ, our cosy evening social space, alongside the PSYSOCNE MONTHLY PSYCHEDELIC INTEGRATION CIRCLE, a peer-support and harm-reduction session.

The PERMACOMPUTING CLUB is also back, exploring more thoughtful approaches to technology and computing.

THURSDAY brings our first movie back: Wakaliwood cult action sensation WHO KILLED CAPTAIN ALEX? When Captain Alex is killed fighting the Tiger Mafia, his brother sets out for revenge.

The STAR & SHADOW FILM & TV QUIZ also returns. Bring a team and take on one of the toughest quizzes in town.

FRIDAY brings DESTROYING A LIVING ALBUM LAUNCH with POWTES, NEV CLAY, JASMINE PADGETT FAMILY BAND & WORMS – four takes on Newcastle’s weird, alt and experimental folk scene.

Our Friday film is CUBA AFTER CASTRO, exploring Cuba’s lesser-known history and turbulent present, followed by a Q&A with Rock Around the Blockade.

SATURDAY starts with BURNOUT CLUB, a laid-back space to get creative or simply relax around nice people.

Then TV ON THE BIG SCREEN brings DOCTOR WHO back to the S&S with THE MARK OF THE RANI, featuring the Sixth Doctor in the only televised Doctor Who story set in the North East.

On SUNDAY, the café opens from 12pm alongside ART CLUB and the WOOLLY MAMMOTH KNITTING CLUB.

We round off the week with NO MAN’S LAND. During the Bosnian War, two soldiers from opposing sides become trapped between enemy lines, while a third lies immobilised on a landmine. Darkly funny, tense and devastating.

War is hell. It’s also completely absurd.

NO MAN’S LAND comes to the Star & Shadow next Sunday.

Bosnia, 1993. Soldiers from opposing sides are trapped together in a trench between enemy lines, caught in a situation where every possible solution seems to make things worse.

Tense, darkly funny and increasingly chaotic, Denis Tanović’s razor-sharp anti-war satire takes aim at soldiers, politicians, peacekeepers and the media alike as a deadly stand-off spirals out of control.

Winner of the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, NO MAN’S LAND is a bitterly funny and devastating portrait of the madness of war.

GET THAT CORN OUTTA MY FACE!

Jack Black gets into the stretchy pants and steps into the ring as NACHO LIBRE comes to the Star & Shadow this November.

By day, Nacho cooks terrible food for the orphans at a Mexican monastery. By night, he secretly pursues his true calling: becoming a legendary luchador.

Teaming up with the painfully skinny Esqueleto, Nacho enters the wrestling ring in search of money, glory and possibly a little respect. Unfortunately, he’s not very good at it.

From Jared Hess, director of NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, NACHO LIBRE is a gloriously ridiculous cult comedy packed with wrestling, deadpan weirdness and peak Jack Black.

Next Saturday, TV ON THE BIG SCREEN returns with DOCTOR WHO: THE MARK OF THE RANI — the Sixth Doctor’s only televised adventure set in the North East.

The TARDIS lands in Industrial Revolution-era Killingworth, where the Doctor and Peri face not one but TWO renegade Time Lords: the Master and the Rani, making her Doctor Who debut.

Nearly 40 years later, it remains the only televised Doctor Who story set in the North East — so where better to see it on the big screen?

Time is a prison.

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s mind-bending THE ENDLESS comes to the Star & Shadow Cinema this November.

Years after escaping the mysterious cult where they grew up, brothers Justin and Aaron receive a strange video message that draws them back to the remote community they thought they’d left behind for good.

But something isn’t right. Strange events begin to repeat, impossible phenomena surround them and an unseen presence appears to be watching. As the brothers search for answers, leaving a second time might prove much harder than they imagined.

Written, directed by and starring Benson and Moorhead, THE ENDLESS is a blend of cosmic horror, science fiction and psychological mystery that rewards knowing as little as possible before you watch it.

CUBA AFTER CASTRO comes to the Star & Shadow next Friday, followed by a Q&A with Rock Around the Blockade.

What does Cuba look like after the Castros?

Featuring an unprecedented interview with Miguel Díaz-Canel — the country’s first leader born after the Revolution — CUBA AFTER CASTRO offers a perspective on contemporary Cuba rarely seen in Western media.

Against a backdrop of intensified US sanctions, the pandemic, domestic protests and political upheaval, the film examines the enormous pressures facing Cuba today and follows Díaz-Canel’s journey from grassroots organiser to the country’s presidency.

After the screening, join us for a Q&A with Rock Around the Blockade, who are currently raising funds to send material aid to Cuba.

Break-ups are messy. So is figuring out the rest of your life.

Desiree Akhavan’s APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR comes to the Star & Shadow Cinema this November.

Shirin is newly single, bis*xual, Iranian-American and attempting to navigate life in Brooklyn while convincing everyone she’s absolutely fine. She isn’t. Between disastrous dates, family expectations and trying to understand what went wrong with her ex, getting her life back on track proves easier said than done.

Written, directed by and starring Akhavan, APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR is smart, dryly funny and gloriously awkward — a comedy about s*x, identity, family and the chaos of starting over.

DEREK VS DEREK comes to the Star & Shadow Cinema this autumn.

On a country road in Devon, intensive dairy farmer Derek Banbury looks on in horror at the “devastation” of his neighbour’s once productive farm. That neighbour is Derek Gow — the media-dubbed “maverick rewilder” and former sheep farmer determined to transform his land into a haven for nature.

Filmed over three years, DEREK VS DEREK follows their turbulent relationship as tempers flare, wild animals run amok and the landscape around them is radically transformed.

From award-winning director James Dawson, this is a film about farming and land use told by the farmers themselves — blunt, funny, thoughtful and unexpectedly heartwarming.
