This Sunday at the Star & Shadow Cinema, step into the dark and dreamlike world of Guillermo del Toro’s PAN’S LABYRINTH.

Set in post Civil War Spain in 1944, the film follows young Ofelia as she arrives at a remote military outpost with her pregnant mother and cruel stepfather, Captain Vidal. Surrounded by violence and repression, she discovers an ancient labyrinth where a mysterious faun sets her a series of strange and dangerous tasks, revealing a hidden world that blurs the line between fantasy and reality.

Combining fairytale imagery with the brutal realities of fascism, PAN’S LABYRINTH remains one of Guillermo del Toro’s most extraordinary films. Haunting, beautiful and deeply emotional, it moves between moments of wonder and horror with unforgettable creatures, stunning practical effects and a powerful story about innocence, resistance and imagination.

Winner of three Academy Awards, PAN’S LABYRINTH is a modern fantasy classic and an incredible film to experience on the big screen.

This Saturday, head down to the Star & Shadow and celebrate five years of the Ewan Brown Newcastle Anarchist Bookfair.

2026 marks the fifth annual Newcastle Ewan Brown Anarchist Bookfair, a celebration of the life and legacy of Ewan Brown and a tribute to the radical history, present and future of the North East. On Saturday 30 May, the doors open once again for a full day of stalls, workshops, live music, discussion and art, bringing together activists, artists, thinkers and community members in the spirit of solidarity and resistance.

Hosted at the Star & Shadow Cinema in Newcastle’s east end, the bookfair continues to be organised by a dedicated group of volunteers and made possible through donations and community support. The aim remains the same: to create an inclusive and accessible space for people to share ideas, discover new writing, connect with others and imagine fairer futures together.

Whether you’re coming to browse anarchist literature, meet local groups, take part in workshops or simply spend time in a vibrant community space, the Ewan Brown Anarchist Bookfair promises a packed and inspiring day.

Return to the world of THE MATRIX with this visually stunning anthology of animated shorts exploring artificial intelligence, fractured realities, resistance and human connection. Bringing together different directors and animation styles, THE ANIMATRIX dives deeper into the darker, stranger and more philosophical corners of the series.

Featuring FINAL FLIGHT OF THE OSIRIS, THE SECOND RENAISSANCE, KID’S STORY, PROGRAM, WORLD RECORD, BEYOND, A DETECTIVE STORY and MATRICULATED, the collection moves between action, horror, cyberpunk and existential sci fi.

Tomorrow at the Star & Shadow Cinema, René Laloux’s visionary sci fi landmark FANTASTIC PLANET. Only a handful of tickets left!

Set on the alien world of Ygam, the film imagines a society where enormous blue creatures known as the Draags dominate every aspect of life, while humans, called Oms, exist as disposable pets or pests. When one Om escapes and gains access to forbidden knowledge, the possibility of rebellion slowly begins to emerge.

Blending psychedelic imagery, eerie sound design and surreal cut out animation, FANTASTIC PLANET creates a world that feels both beautiful and deeply unsettling. Decades after its release, it remains one of the boldest and most unforgettable animated science fiction films ever made.
