For five days, a man was borrowed.

This Friday, prepare for one of cinema’s most disturbing close encounters as FIRE IN THE SKY (1993) lands at the Star & Shadow!

Deep in the Arizona wilderness, a group of loggers witness a mysterious light in the sky. Moments later, one of them vanishes.

With no body, no evidence and an unbelievable story, his friends find themselves suspected of murder.

Then, five days later, Travis Walton returns.

Based on an alleged true story, FIRE IN THE SKY is a chilling journey into the unknown, featuring one of the most nightmarish alien abduction sequences ever put on screen.

Some encounters are better left unexplained.

Join us tomorrow evening as COMMUNITY KITCHEN returns to the Star & Shadow for another night of food, conversation, creativity and community!

Come along for a delicious vegan meal, meet new people, share skills or simply enjoy a relaxed evening together.

There’s always something happening, from repairs and crafts to workshops, making and mending. Every month is different, shaped by the people who come along and what they bring to share.

Food served 6–8PM, with free hot drinks throughout the evening. The building stays open until 9PM, so drop in and stay a while!

FIX IT CAFÉ is back tomorrow at the Star & Shadow Cinema, as part of COMMUNITY KITCHEN.

Got something broken, worn out or in need of a little attention? Bring it along and work alongside our volunteer fixers to see if it can be given a new lease of life.

From small electronics and bikes to turntables and household items, FIX IT CAFÉ is about sharing knowledge, picking up practical skills and repairing rather than replacing. No experience needed.

Please remember: this isn’t a repair service. All items must leave with their owner on the night, we don’t repair phones, and when it’s busy we operate a one item per person system.

Come along for fixing, learning, good conversation and a warm meal from COMMUNITY KITCHEN.

A CELEBRATION OF BLACK VOICES THROUGH MUSIC.

This Wednesday, join us at the Star & Shadow for VERISIMILITUDES: A JOURNEY THROUGH ART SONG IN BLACK, BROWN, AND TAN, a powerful celebration of Black musical creativity, identity and expression.

This award-winning concert film brings together song and image to explore the many realities of Blackness, while shining a spotlight on the extraordinary contributions of Black composers and lyricists to the classical art song tradition.

Through music and performance, VERISIMILITUDES celebrates voices, stories and artistic achievements too often overlooked in classical music history.

Presented as part of BLACK BRITISH HISTORY MONTH, we’re hosting TWO FREE SCREENINGS.

The Creed family have found their dream home in rural Maine. But deep in the woods lies an ancient burial ground with a horrifying secret: the dead can come back.

When tragedy strikes, Louis Creed discovers that bringing back what you’ve lost comes at a terrible price.

Directed by Mary Lambert and adapted by King himself, PET SEMATARY (1989) is a nightmarish descent into grief, madness and the terrifying consequences of playing God.

WEDNESDAY
COMMUNITY KITCHEN returns with food, conversation and activities across the building.

FIX-IT CAFÉ is back! Bring along your broken items and see if they can be repaired.

For Black History Month, VERISIMILITUDES: A JOURNEY THROUGH ART SONG IN BLACK, BROWN, AND TAN celebrates Black composers and lyricists in an award-winning concert film exploring Black identity through classical song.

THURSDAY
STARAOKE returns! Grab the mic, belt out your favourites and dance the night away.

Stephen King’s PET SEMATARY brings the horror as a grieving father discovers an ancient burial ground with the power to raise the dead.

FRIDAY
FIRE IN THE SKY takes us into alien abduction terror, based on the alleged disappearance of an Arizona logger in 1975.

SATURDAY
FIX-IT CAFÉ returns for INTERNATIONAL REPAIR DAY! Get help with repairs, borrow tools or join in the fixing.

TV ON THE BIG SCREEN presents the complete 1977 folk-horror classic CHILDREN OF THE STONES. Enter a village where everyone is happy. Unnaturally happy.

SUNDAY
Get creative with ART CLUB, CREATIVE WRITING GROUP and WOOLLY MAMMOTHS knitting group, with the café open throughout.

STARCADE spins the WHEEL OF MYSTERY! Four presenters explore three randomly selected video games in this free event.

We round off the week with GREEN FOR DANGER, a classic British murder mystery set in a wartime hospital.

FOUR FILMS. TWO DAYS. ONE OF CINEMA’S MOST EXTRAORDINARY VOICES.

THE CINEMA OF RITWIK GHATAK comes to the Star & Shadow this November for a special two-day retrospective.

Radical, uncompromising and fiercely original, Ritwik Ghatak created some of the most powerful films in South Asian cinema.

Drawing on the devastating consequences of Partition, displacement, inequality and environmental destruction, his films blend myth, melodrama and bold experimentation into unforgettable stories of loss, resistance and survival.

Rarely seen on the big screen, four of Ghatak’s remarkable films return in a retrospective curated by film scholar and documentarian Sanghita Sen.

SHE WAS A CINEMA PIONEER. HISTORY LEFT HER ON THE CUTTING ROOM FLOOR.

BE NATURAL: THE UNTOLD STORY OF ALICE GUY-BLACHÉ comes to the Star & Shadow TOMORROW!

Before Hollywood, before the talkies, and while cinema was still finding its feet, Alice Guy-Blaché was already breaking new ground.

One of the world’s first narrative filmmakers, she experimented with sound, colour and special effects, founded her own studio and helped shape the language of cinema.

Then, somehow, film history almost forgot her.

Narrated by Jodie Foster, Pamela B. Green’s fascinating documentary pieces together the extraordinary life and career of a filmmaker whose influence was immense, but whose name was nearly lost. It’s time to give Alice Guy-Blaché her rightful place in cinema history.
