MIDNIGHT SCREENING: The Most Dangerous Game (1932)

Before there was King Kong, before countless survival thrillers, and before the “human hunted for sport” premise became a staple of cinema, there was The Most Dangerous Game.

Released in 1932 and based on Richard Connell’s famous short story, this remarkably tense pre-Code thriller follows a shipwrecked hunter who finds himself pursued across a remote island by an aristocrat who has grown bored of hunting animals and seeks a more challenging prey: human beings.

Made by many of the same creative team who would soon bring King Kong to the screen, the film famously shares sets, atmosphere, and technical innovations with that landmark production. Its influence can be seen across decades of cinema, from survival horror and action films to modern thrillers centred on deadly games of cat and mouse.

Join us at the Grosvenor Picture Theatre for a midnight screening of one of the most influential thrillers ever made! Friday 5th June, tickets £10

JUNE DIRECTOR SEASON:

BILLY WILDER

A director's director and a writer's writer, Billy Wilder's films are regarded as some of the best ever made. With his razor-sharp wit and effortless storytelling, it's not hard to see why. We've chosen four of his best to present this month.

Double Indemnity: This film set the standard for film-noir. The low-key lighting, the shadows, the morally questionable protagonists...this film has it all and it has never been done better.

Sunset Boulevard: One for the "films about film-making" lovers. Gloria Swanson gives one of the all time great performances. Always ranked in countless "Best films ever made" lists and yes, it is THAT good.

Ace in the Hole: A powerful portrayal of how impactful and manipulative the media can be. Billy Wilder himself cited this is one of his best films. It also contains one of cinema's great dramatic endings.

The Apartment: What more is there to say that hasn't already been said about The Apartment. It is a masterpiece in every way you can think of. Acting, continuity, pacing, I could go on and on. Truly a fantastic cinema experience.

Shown on Monday mornings and Wednesday evenings, these are not to be missed. Get your tickets now on our website.

This Friday at midnight, we’re going deep into space with a sci-fi masterpiece that still hits hard today!

We’re screening Silent Running (1972), an eerie, beautiful, and emotional film that asks a question that feels more urgent than ever: what happens when humanity decides nature is disposable?

Set aboard a drifting space freighter carrying the last surviving forests, Silent Running is part dystopian sci-fi, part ecological warning, and completely unforgettable. If you love thoughtful science fiction, practical effects, and cinema that actually has something to say, this is unmissable!
