A closer look at the films in our October programme 👁️

Three films, three routes through music, displacement, belonging, return and the connections between Africa and its diaspora.

This October, we’re thinking about the routes between Africa and its diaspora.

Sandpit Collective is back at The Rose Hill with SOUL TO SOUL: Cinematic Routes of Return, our three-film programme for Black History Month.

We start in Ghana with Soul to Soul (1971), filmed around the huge 1971 concert in Accra that brought Ghanaian and African-American musicians together.

From there, Bushman (1971) takes us to 1970s San Francisco. Gabriel, a young Nigerian man living there, navigates a place that continually projects its own ideas of Africa and Blackness onto him.

Finally, we return to Senegal with Djibril Diop Mambéty’s Hyenas (1992), where Linguère Ramatou comes back to the town that rejected her years before, now incredibly wealthy and with a proposition for the people who live there.

Three very different films, taking us through encounters, displacement, imagined connections and shifting ideas of what it means to leave, belong and return.

As always, we’ll start each evening with a short introduction to the film and its context, and stick around afterwards to talk about what we’ve watched together.

Power is not only something that sits outside of us or above us. It is also something we absorb, carry, reproduce, and sometimes resist.

For the closing night of the Mirrors for Princes season, Sandpit Collective presents a programme of Palestinian and Iranian short films.

Screening followed by tea, cake, conversation, and a collective collage session.

o gozar-e ‘omr bebin

‘Sit by the stream,
and study the passing of things.’

Sizdah Bedar is the 13th day of Nowruz (Persian New Year), a day to leave
the خانه (home), step into طبیعت (nature),
and release what we have carried.

This gesture where سبزه (sprouted greens),
grown for the new year, is returned to آب روان (flowing water)

to let go, cleanse, begin again.

In Taxi (Jafar Panahi, 2015),
a goldfish is carried through the city in urgency, a small life, held carefully, on its way back to water.

رسید مژده که ایام غم نخواهد ماند
چنان نماند و چنین نیز هم نخواهد ماند

Resīd mojda ke ayyām-e gham
nakhāhad mānd

Chenān namānad o chenīn nīz ham
nakhāhad mānd

“This too shall pass.”

In the tradition of Mirrors for Princes,
we welcome this reminder:

that holding and releasing are both part of wisdom.

May the رودها (rivers) carry away sorrow,
may the زمین (land) renew itself in tenderness, may spring reach every خانه (home), every دل (heart).

Following last night’s mehfil at the Rose Hill, where the Persian String Collective gathered to mark Nowruz, we wanted to share something for today.

Nowruz marks the beginning of the new year in Iran and the arrival of spring.
It’s a time rooted in renewal, of nature, of relationships, of starting again.

This year, it also coincides with Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan. This is a rare convergence, and it is arriving at a difficult time.

Across Iran and in the diaspora, many people are living through this time with grief, distance, and ongoing violence. Celebrations may be less evident, but the meaning of the day hasn’t disappeared. If anything, it feels more important.

So this is just to acknowledge the day, as it is:

renewal, even when things are uncertain
the idea that something can begin again, even if slowly

Which parts of ourselves do we perform so we can be seen?

Before tomorrow’s screening of Layla, we put together a playlist of diasporic club sounds that sit in the same world as the film.

Have a listen and come join us at The Rose Hill this Tuesday so we can watch and create together.

After the film, we’ll be staying for an open collage session. Just a space to chat, hang out and make something in response to what we’ve watched.

All materials provided. No experience needed. Everyone’s welcome.

A contemporary portrait of love, visibility, and belonging, Layla follows a British-Palestinian drag performer navigating intimacy, performance, and the pressures of recognition across different social worlds.

Join us tomorrow as we open Mirrors for Princes with The Syrian Bride (2004), directed by Eran Riklis.

Set in a Druze village divided by borders, the film follows a young woman on her wedding day as she is forced to confront a devastating reality. Crossing a political line means losing the right to ever return home. What should be a celebration becomes a negotiation with power, paperwork, and permanence.

The film will be followed by discussion and our collective collage making session.
