Following last night’s mehfil at the Rose Hill, where the Persian String Collective gathered to mark Nowruz, we wanted to share something for today.

Nowruz marks the beginning of the new year in Iran and the arrival of spring.
It’s a time rooted in renewal, of nature, of relationships, of starting again.

This year, it also coincides with Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan. This is a rare convergence, and it is arriving at a difficult time.

Across Iran and in the diaspora, many people are living through this time with grief, distance, and ongoing violence. Celebrations may be less evident, but the meaning of the day hasn’t disappeared. If anything, it feels more important.

So this is just to acknowledge the day, as it is:

renewal, even when things are uncertain
the idea that something can begin again, even if slowly

Which parts of ourselves do we perform so we can be seen?

Before tomorrow’s screening of Layla, we put together a playlist of diasporic club sounds that sit in the same world as the film.

Have a listen and come join us at The Rose Hill this Tuesday so we can watch and create together.

After the film, we’ll be staying for an open collage session. Just a space to chat, hang out and make something in response to what we’ve watched.

3 March: LAYLA (2024)

Join us for the next edition of our current film cycle, Mirrors for Princes: An Exploration of Power, Within and Without.

A contemporary portrait of love, visibility, and belonging, Layla follows a British-Palestinian drag performer navigating intimacy, performance, and the pressures of recognition across different social worlds.

Join us tomorrow as we open Mirrors for Princes with The Syrian Bride (2004), directed by Eran Riklis.

Set in a Druze village divided by borders, the film follows a young woman on her wedding day as she is forced to confront a devastating reality. Crossing a political line means losing the right to ever return home. What should be a celebration becomes a negotiation with power, paperwork, and permanence.

The film will be followed by discussion and our collective collage making session.

First screening of the year, back at !
We open our Mirrors for Princes film cycle with Wedding in Galilee (1987), directed by Michel Khleifi.

Often cited as the first feature film to depict Palestinian life made by a Palestinian filmmaker, Wedding in Galilee was released at a time when Palestinian stories were largely absent from cinema. The film went on to win the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival.

Set in a Palestinian village in Galilee, the story centres on a wedding day. What begins as a celebration is shaped by tension when military authority enters even the most intimate moments of daily life.

Following the screening, you are invited to respond creatively to the film through collage. The works created will be gathered throughout the season into a collective zine

MIRRORS FOR PRINCES | مرايا الأمراء

A season of cinema reflecting power, within and without.

The title Mirrors for Princes comes from a classical literary genre from the Islamic world, known in Arabic as مرايا الأمراء. These texts were written as moral guides for rulers, offering reflections on how power should be exercised, often through advice, storytelling, and ethical reflection rather than direct instruction.

This season, we borrow the term and turn the mirror toward cinema. Across three screenings, we explore how power is performed, negotiated, internalised, and resisted.

Each screening will be followed by a collage workshop, inviting audiences to respond creatively to the films and reflect together.

The works created across the season will be assembled into a collective zine.

As this year comes to an end, we want to thank everyone who shared space with us and made this year’s screenings what they were. You make our years warmer 🫂

Here are a few moments from the final event of our ASWAAT / Voices season. We screened Four Daughters and stayed together afterwards to reflect, collage, and put our thoughts on paper.

Next year brings a new cycle, a new beginning. We’re looking forward to what’s to come.

We close Aswaat / Voices with Four Daughters by Kaouther Ben Hania, screening on Tuesday 2 December at The Rose Hill.
The film blends testimony and reenactment as Olfa Hamrouni confronts the disappearance of her two eldest daughters. Real family members share the screen with actors who stand in for the missing, creating a powerful reflection on memory, voice, and the weight of inherited silence.
Winner of L’Œil d’Or at Cannes and the César for Best Documentary, Four Daughters is a landmark of contemporary Arab feminist cinema.
Directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, whose recent film The Voice of Hind Rajab received a 12 minute standing ovation at Cannes.

After the screening, we invite you to Fragments Speak, a collage and cut up workshop inspired by the film. This open making space uses fragments of text and image to rethink stories and create new reflections on voice, womanhood, and agency. Materials will be provided and everyone is welcome to join.
