Mary Harron has built one of contemporary cinema’s sharpest bodies of work examining the myths and contradictions of American culture. To celebrate the new 4K restoration of I SHOT ANDY WARHOL, this August we are pairing her acclaimed debut with AMERICAN PSYCHO, two defining works that trace a line from the radical art world of the 1960s to the consumer excess of the 1980s. Together, they showcase Harron’s singular ability to expose the uneasy relationship between fame, power, identity, and violence.

This year's edition of the Fraenkel Film Festival concludes with a cornerstone of the French New Wave, HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR, selected by artist Kota Ezawa.

A French actress (Emmanuelle Riva) and a Japanese architect (Eiji Okada) engage in a brief, intense affair in postwar Hiroshima, their consuming mutual fascination impelling them to exorcise their own scarred memories of love and suffering.

Drawing from media, art history, and popular culture, Kota Ezawa investigates the power of certain images, distilling memories of significant historical moments into their basic forms. Using animation, slide projections, lightboxes, paper cut-outs, and collage, Ezawa transforms complex visual information into its most essential elements, creating striking, flattened versions of photographs and artworks that explore the construction of shared experience through images.

If poetry had a pop icon, it would be Mary Oliver – celebrated bestseller, Pulitzer Prize-winner, lover of dogs and the beauty of nature.

A moving exploration of the life behind the poetry, MARY OLIVER: SAVED BY THE BEAUTY OF THE WORLD is coming to The Roxie starting Thursday, July 16. Featuring interviews with her close friends, including John Waters, never-before-seen personal photos, notebooks, and correspondence from her archive, and recitations of her work by Stephen Colbert, Lucy Dacus, Steve Buscemi, and Oprah Winfrey.

Don't miss Hiroshi Teshigahara's staggering work of existential science fiction, THE FACE OF ANOTHER (1966), playing in 35mm on Wednesday, July 15 as part of the Fraenkel Film Festival. Selected by multidisciplinary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto, the film dissects identity with the sure hand of a surgeon.

Okuyama (YOJIMBO’s Tatsuya Nakadai), after being burned and disfigured in an industrial accident and estranged from his family and friends, agrees to his psychiatrist’s radical experiment: a face transplant, created from the mold of a stranger. As Okuyama is thus further alienated from the world around him, he finds himself giving in to his darker temptations.

Working in photography since the 1970s, Hiroshi Sugimoto's practice includes sculpture, performing arts production, and architecture. His work explores history and temporal existence by investigating themes of time, empiricism, and metaphysics. As stated by the artist, "Rather than the camera projecting the outside world onto film, I am using it to project outward the world that exists inside me."

In celebration of ADA Day on July 26, the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, The Roxie will present a double feature and panel discussion honoring trailblazing San Francisco disabled activists and artists.

The screening includes SIGN 504 NOW!–a 30min documentary about the revolutionary occupation of the San Francisco Federal Building by disabled activists in 1977, provided by the GLBT Historical Society–and VIVIEN’S WILD RIDE, a feature-length documentary about iconic local film editor Vivien Hilgrove’s experience losing her vision to macular degeneration.
