FREEWAY, writer-director Matthew Bright's twisted take on Little Red Riding Hood, returns as part of our Arthouse 50 series.

Emblematic of the bold and unique films championed by our film distribution company, Roxie Releasing, this pitch-black comedy crime thriller follows a serial killer (Kiefer Sutherland) who meets his match in teenage juvenile delinquent Vanessa, played by Reese Witherspoon in one of her most underrated roles.

“Rude in the way the truth is rude — only funnier. The movie seduces with its humor, all the while presenting a realized vision of a harsh, absurd world.” — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

🚀 Join us for a one-night-only screening of a rare 35mm print of Cory McAbee’s cult-classic space western musical THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT (2001)!

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Sundance-destroying cult classic.

Written, directed by, and starring Cory McAbee of the legendary cult band The Billy Nayer Show, THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT is a wildly original sci-fi musical western shot in stark black and white.

Hard-boiled interplanetary trader Samuel Curtis travels through a grubby frontier of derelicts, grease monkeys, strange planets, and stranger characters on a Homeric mission to deliver a suitable male to the all-female planet Venus—all while being pursued by the enigmatic killer Professor Hess.

Featuring music by The Billy Nayer Show and some of the most unforgettable rock ’n’ roll sequences ever committed to film.

“Emphatically perverse, a salute to the Midnight Movie, a cultural land mass that spawned John Waters and David Lynch.” — Elvis Mitchell, The New York Times

Ten years ago, San Francisco established the Legacy Business Registry to celebrate and support the independent spots that make our city special—and The Roxie was proud to be among the very first recognized!

Maybe you’ve noticed the plaque on our storefront while waiting in line for a screening. As a neighborhood movie house with roots stretching back +113 years, we’re fiercely proud to stand alongside the many small, long-time businesses keeping SF’s culture alive.

We love collaborating with our fellow legacy neighbors: 👕 Babylon Burning Screen Printing, Inc. prints our cool merch 🚢 Our Floating Features series with Red and White Fleet returns this fall! 🎥 Huge shoutout to our comrades at BAVC Media for keeping independent media thriving in the Bay Area.

Here’s to all the longtime independent businesses and organizations that keep San Francisco interesting. We’re proud to be one of them, and even prouder to work alongside them.

Horror master Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan) returns to zombie cinema with COLONY, fresh from its Cannes Midnight world premiere and Korea’s biggest local opening of the year.

Inside a Seoul high-rise, a science conference becomes ground zero for a fast-mutating virus. The authorities seal the building, turning its glass-and-steel corporate order into a slaughterhouse where every floor brings fresh betrayals, brutal calculations, and new ways to die.

COLONY is a zombie movie for the AI age: system-based, smart, hungry for more, and moving too fast to contain.

Starts Friday, August 28

On June 27, 2026, the Tenderloin Museum experienced severe water damage originating from The Cadillac Hotel that affected their lobby and portions of the main exhibition space.

Out of care for the collection, staff, and visitors, they closed to assess the damage, and the repairs have proven more extensive than first anticipated, from restoring ceilings, walls, and building systems to rebuilding their galleries and installing a new drainage system to help prevent future water intrusion.

Help with the recovery efforts, so they can restore, repair, and rebuild, and reopen this fall. Make a donation here:
