A short John Carney appreciation post. We are getting his latest film “Power Ballad” starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas on June 5, but have you seen his earlier films?

“Once” came out in 2006 and shot on a micro-budget on the streets of Dublin and is about a street performer and a single mother creating songs together. The original song “Falling Slowly” would go on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song and the two leads Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová still perform the song to this day.

“Sing Street” is set in the 1980s and follows a teenager going through catholic school who starts a band to impress a girl. It’s filled to the brim with catchy songs that fit the time period and is a great coming-of-age story about navigating the jungles of life.

He’s made a few other films as well but “Once” and “Sing Street” are especially phenomenal movies that everyone should see. Carney’s always found a way to implement amazing original music into music-centric films. That’s why we are excited for his next film coming to the Glenwood Arts June 5. Rudd grew up in Overland Park so we hope he has time to stop by and see his old stomping grounds.

We have 3 small but wonderful movies opening up tomorrow!

"The Gardener" stars Radha Mitchell and is about a cosmetic heiress escaping to a mountain cottage only to bond with an enigmatic gardener, sparking a transformative journey of healing and self-discovery.

"Blue Heron" is the indie darling from newcomer Sophy Romvari getting some serious high praise from the critics. It follows a family of six settling into their new home on Vancouver Island as internal dynamics are slowly revealed through the eyes of the youngest child.

"The Stranger" is a French film which played last weekend in our French Film Festival from filmmaker François Ozon and is based on the Albert Camus novel of the same name. This dark and moody noir is sure to get you thinking.
