Atomic Ballroom Partners with Visit Newport Beach for a Guinness World Records™ Attempt

Atomic Ballroom is proud to partner with Visit Newport Beach for a FREE, exciting, and historic community event: an official Guinness World Records™ attempt for the Largest Swing Dance Lesson featuring Balboa, the iconic swing dance born right here in Newport Beach.

WHAT: World’s Largest Swing Dance Lesson. Learn the Balboa Swing, invented in Newport Beach during the Big Band era.

WHEN: Sunday, April 19

WHERE: Peninsula Park Athletic Field (next to Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, CA)

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

10:00 am – 11:00 am – Check-in Time & Live Music

11:15 am – 11:45 am – The official Guinness World Record Attempt (30 minutes)

After, enjoy live music, food trucks, giveaways, and more.

No dance experience necessary. Ages 13 and up.
What Is Balboa?

Balboa is a style of swing dance that originated on the Balboa Peninsula during the Big Band era. It began as a close-embrace dance designed for the crowded Rendezvous Ballroom, then evolved to include the turns, spins, and open movement called Bal-Swing. Its roots are deeply tied to Newport Beach and the legendary Rendezvous Ballroom, making this event a meaningful celebration of local history and culture.

Live Music

The event will feature live music by The Jonathan Stout Orchestra featuring Hilary Alexander. Band leaders and members of the orchestra are deeply connected to the Balboa tradition, making them the perfect band to help bring this historic dance to life.

This event is also endorsed by local historians, the Pacific Swing Dance Foundation, and the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame.

Tonight’s the night!

Early bird weekend & party pass rates expire at midnight (Pacific time)!

NJC contest registration opens at 8 PM (Pacific time)!

Competitors! We can’t wait to watch you throw down this year! Make sure to:

Confer with your partner who is paying the fee. Every competitor needs at least a party pass to participate, but only one partner registers for the contest and pays the $50 fee. This covers both people so no need to register twice.

Remember you can only be in one M&M contest unless dancing a different role, as in, you can’t be an Amateur Follow and and an Advanced Follow.

This year due to high demand you can only be in one Showcase routine (unless dancing a different role).

When contests sell out, you can grab a free wait list ticket and we’ll email you as spots open.

For Teams, only one person pays the Team fee. Dancers can be on more than one team, but all dancers must be at least party pass holders to participate.

Here’s some important policy notes:

*Our discounted room rate for 2026 is $169/night for a standard single or double room (extra charges for poolside or pool view) + taxes and fees per the LA Hotel Worker Protection Ordinance*

*This year you have until 11:59 PM PST Wednesday, July 29th to cancel or modify your room - non-refundable advanced deposits will be charged on July 30th*

*You can book up to three rooms in one reservation. If you need to book more than three rooms, please start a new reservation*

*Our discounted room rate expires on 8/13/26 at 5:00 PM PST*

*Rooms will sell out fast - last year our block was full by January. If you find you need to cancel, you don’t have to alert us, just cancel through the hotel and the room will be put back in our block. Please cancel as soon as you know you won’t be using the room so other attendees can book it! For those looking for last minute deals, all of the rooms cancelled by 7/29 will be added into our block, so the two weeks between 7/29 and 8/15 are great for grabbing a newly available room!*

*Don’t forget to book your room for Thursday night! There’s a welcome dance Thursday night and classes start first thing Friday AM!*
