JALLIKATTU will be screening at AFI Fest 2019!!

Like the ferocious beast at the center of JALLIKATTU that eludes capture by an entire village of pursuers, Malayalam filmmaker Lilo Jose Pellissery breaks through the passivity of the movie-going experience with this fresh, totally original vision of contemporary Indian cinema.

When a buffalo escapes in a village in the tropical state of Kerala, all hell breaks loose as dozens of men try in vain to wrestle it under control. A teeming world of base human behavior is also unleashed as long-simmering rivalries, jealousies and other human frailties are exposed and rubbed raw over the course of this endless night of vigilante justice enacted against the rampaging buffalo. JALLIKATTU is a unique, adrenaline-fueled, brilliantly imagined and highly experiential spectacle that pulsates with energy from start-to-finish.

Cat Sticks

Congratulations to Ronny Sen and team on a glowing review for Cat Sticks which premiered at IFFLA 2019.

https://www.film-rezensionen.de/2019/09/cat-sticks/ We get 9 von 10 in our first German review.
Within the narrative cosmos of the film, Sen seems to depict his characters as dreamers who, in a mixture of disappointment, blissful indifference and youthful curiosity, deny their everyday lives. Not infrequently, the film's aesthetics are marked by the closeness to the works of the French Nouvelle Vague, especially the cinema of a Robert Bresson or François Truffaut, or the human sympathy underlying the cinema of John Cassavetes. Drugs are part of the lives of these people, a fatal lust that is also the starting point of many aesthetically beautiful moments, such as when two naked addicts engage in a kind of dance, weaving their bodies together in search of a vein for the syringe. Especially in this paradox of beauty and fatalism is the provocative power of a movie like Cat Sticks. Through its structure, the film manages a multifaceted approach to his time, his subject and his characters as well as a view that is less interested in morality than in the humanity of his characters. #CatSticks

“When it came time to shoot the film, I reached out to a lot of my classmates that I’d remained friends with after graduation. I asked them to help me out. A lot of it was just having the right producer trying to keep the cost down, and then me trying to keep the cost down further and we kind of plunged through.” - Director Ronak Shah of #lovegoesthroughyourmind #IFFLA2019

Charulata is the smoldering tale of wealth, art, and forbidden love from legendary director Satyajit Ray (The Apu Trilogy). In 19th century upper-class India, a housewife imprisoned by luxury and neglected by her husband develops dangerous feelings for her visiting cousin-in-law. Ray chronicles the ensuing drama with deep nuance and sumptuous black and white cinematography that must be seen on the big screen to be fully experienced. Based on the novella by Rabindranath Tagore, Ray himself said he considered this his best film. We will be showing a beautiful, restored 16mm print.

The program will begin with a special 16mm screening of Ishu Patel’s gorgeous and hypnotic Oscar-nominated short, Paradise (1984).
