#IFFLARecommends three great new ways to celebrate South Asian female filmmakers this Women's History Month!

Bombay Rose, the debut feature of India's animation veteran and IFFLA alum #GitanjaliRao (Printed Rainbow), was to be part of IFFLA 2020 before the pandemic, and is now available worldwide on Netflix! A visually stunning hand-painted animation, it's a love story set against the bustling city of Bombay, between a young flower seller Kamala and an orphaned refugee, Salim.

Flora & Ulysses, directed by IFFLA alum Lena Khan (The Tiger Hunter) is the emotional, hopeful and super-fun journey of the unlikely friendship between a young cynical girl dealing with her parents' separation, and a squirrel with superpowers she finds! Now streaming on Disney+ and Hotstar.

The series #BombayBegums, directed by IFFLA alums #AlankritaShrivastava (Lipstick Under My Burkha) and #BornilaChatterjee ( The Hungry) follows five different women from different socioeconomic backgrounds in Mumbai as they try to overcome their daily struggles, achieve their dreams, and stand up to those who are silently complicit with perpetrators of sexual harassment. Available on Netflix worldwide.

INDIAN FILM FESTIVAL OF LOS ANGELES

The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) is a nonprofit organization devoted to a greater appreciation of Indian cinema and culture by showcasing films, supporting emerging filmmakers, and promoting the diverse perspectives of the Indian diaspora.

Each year the festival features a rich mix of film programs designed to build and support the growing interest in the Indian entertainment industry. This includes programming that cultivates an audience for Indian films while supporting filmmakers of Indian descent in career development as they navigate the larger studio system in Hollywood. IFFLA’s industry programs include the One-on-One program where film industry professionals from major and independent production and distribution companies are invited to participate in meetings with the IFFLA filmmakers; and panel discussions with speakers from the film industry.

VENUE

The 18th annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) will take place April 1-5, 2020 at Regal L.A. LIVE, the state-of-the-art, world-class cinema in the heart of Los Angeles’ vibrant and developing downtown district. The Opening Night Gala will be at ArcLight Hollywood.

Searching for Jung Indian film in 1996
“Darkness Visible” will be playing at the AMC Stadium Citywalk 19, premiering on February 8th. I recently watched the trailer to this film and I’m super excited to see it. The Indian-influenced film stars Jaz Deol and is directed by Neil Biswas. It is a supernatural thriller and looks spiritually frightening. It’s going to be an awesome experience seeing it on the big screen in theaters. I highly recommend going to see it!
