Saturday, October 24: UNLESS SOMETHING GOES TERRIBLY WRONG

Wastewater plants across the country are in need of resuscitation. Half a century after the Clean Water Act radically improved how we handle our sewage, our once-modern facilities have aged beyond their intended lifespans. Over the course of a year, filmmakers Kaitlyn Schwalje and Alex Wolf Lewis follow the day-to-day operations of one wastewater facility and the funny, close-knit, and inventive individuals working to keep it all running.

Doors at 6:30 pm. Screening at 7:00 pm followed by a conversation with filmmaker Alex W. Lewis.

Richard Rodgers, of the iconic musical duo Rodgers & Hammerstein, was born in Arverne in 1902. Join us for a free screening of one of his greatest achievements this Thursday afternoon, October 15, at the Arverne Cinema.

Thursday, October 15: The Sound of Music (1965)

Richard Rodgers, composer of some of the most beloved musicals ever written, was born on Brandreth Avenue (now Beach 79th Street), just blocks away from the Arverne Cinema. This screening celebrates our hometown legend with one cinema’s greatest musical extravaganzas.

Free and open to everyone with priority seating given to community members ages 60+.

One hundred years ago, a woman in her twenties created the first feature-length animation by hand-cutting paper silhouettes and capturing them across 300,000 individual frames.

This Saturday, October 3, join us for Lotte Reiniger’s THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED at the Arverne Cinema with live musical accompaniment by ORDER OF THE ILLUSIVE, our last outdoor screening of the year.

Before the screening, Broken Toys will debut a new shadow puppet play.

Guest-curated by New York–based choreographer and artist Alexa West, this screening brings together cinematic dance scenes — from iconic Hollywood films to perfume ads and music videos — that have shaped her work, including “Amusement,” her latest commission for BEACH SESSIONS, performed earlier this month.

This Saturday, October 3: Puppet duo Broken Toys will bring their new shadow play DEAD HORSE BAY — live-scored by ORDER OF THE ILLUSIVE — to the Arverne Cinema.

We’re excited to present this performance as part of our celebration of the 100th anniversary of The Adventures of Prince Achmed, a spectacular feat of silhouette animation, which will screen with live music accompaniment.
