Please read the message above, and make a statement tomorrow at 6PM during the Senate meeting if you feel inclined to do so, or send us one at [email protected]. We don't intend to needlessly create drama, but current events have left us with no choice but to speak out.
ALT TEXT: A change is being proposed within ASUNM that may eliminate the Southwest Film Center for the Fall 2021 semester. This change will turn the Southwest Film Center into a single Film and Digital Media Chair position under Student Special Events that would involve virtually no programming other than a fraternized Cherry Reel Film Festival, cutting jobs and dropping the floor out from a community that has been around since 1967 as one of the founding agencies within the University. They have tried to make this a quiet affair, but we are not taking this lying down. Neither should you.
This Wednesday (3/31) these changes will be proposed at the ASUNM full senate meeting. We are asking you to attend the meeting and make a statement about the only student-managed film agency in a rapidly growing industry. This is a life-or-death situation for SWFC as you know it, and we need your help to save it: 914 9428 4049 at 6PM. Please come to the meeting to leave a comment or send a statement to us at [email protected] which we will relay.
Southwest Film Center has been dedicated to providing the UNM community with quality cinematic content, from screenings to festivals to special events, for generations. In a place that’s been named as the greatest city for creatives and home to an exponentially expanding film industry, it is shortsighted to eliminate an agency with such a strong community without giving it so much as a bit of dignity and respect. If ASUNM goes through with its plan, the potential of the Southwest Film Center as the epicenter of the young filmmaking community at UNM will be cut short. If ASUNM goes through with its plan, the Southwest Film Center’s legacy along with the potential of our University film community will be forever diminished.
