When The Adventures of Prince Achmed premiered to German audiences in 1926, it was hailed as the first full-length animated film. Taken from the tales known as the Arabian Nights, the film tells the story of a young prince tricked by a wicked sorcerer into mounting a magical, flying horse for a direct course to his own demise. Soaring headlong into a series of wondrous adventures, and joining forces with the likes of Aladdin and a fabled witch, the prince evades his fate by saving a beautiful princess and doing battle with the sorcerer’s army of monsters. This cinematic treasure has been beautifully restored with color tinting. Thrilling, sensuous and dazzling, Prince Achmed will amaze and enthrall audience of all ages.

Final screening!  A new restoration of the early 70’s animation cult flick to-be from the director of HEAVY METAL!

AN UNCLASSIFIABLE ANIMATED ODYSSEY!

One of Canada’s most highly regarded animation filmmakers, Gerald Potterton earned multiple Oscar nominations for his work at the National Film Board of Canada,  contributed to Yellow Submarine, collaborated with Harold Pinter, made a celebrated live action short with Buster Keaton, and directed the 1981 cult classic Heavy Metal. But a decade earlier, he made one other animated feature – Tiki Tiki – that was never widely distributed and remains a singular and much sought-after enigma of its era.  

Doctor Aybolit blasts into space accompanied by his faithful companions, the talking monkey Chichi and the talking dog Avva, hot on the trail of his arch-nemesis Barmalei, a pirate who has kidnapped a group of simian children. Meanwhile, in animated framing sequences, a fast-talking film producer pitches this tale to a studio executive with a personal stake in the story. 

Combining an animated narrative involving a filmmaking monkey – loosely inspired by Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider persona – with segments from little-seen ‘60s live action fantasy film Aybolit-66, this is an unclassifiable cinematic joyride. Over five decades after the film’s (very limited) release, CIP is proud to bring this inspired feat of cinematic imagination back to audiences.

Samantha Morton (Minority Report and TV’s The Walking Dead) is mesmerizing and “gives the female performance of the year” (San Francisco Examiner) as the enigmatic Morvern Callar, in filmmaker Lynne Ramsay’s (Ratcatcher and We Need to Talk About Kevin) highly acclaimed and remarkably assured second feature, based on Alan Warner’s lauded debut novel.

When Morvern Callar wakes up one Christmas morning to discover her boyfriend dead by su***de, it’s the start of an unpredictable and unconventional process of self-transformation. Morvern’s form of grieving will be bewildering and shocking to most. She keeps her boyfriend’s death a secret. She passes off his just-finished novel as her own to publishers. She goes on holiday to Spain. Equal parts road movie and character study, Morvern Callar is as gripping and beautiful as it is dark and inscrutable.

The ever-present and extraordinary soundtrack—stemming from a mixtape made for Morvern by her boyfriend, and including songs by Can, the Velvet Underground, Aphex Twin, Stereolab, Nancy & Lee and more—is masterfully and audaciously woven into the narrative, acting as a voice for a protagonist who often chooses to remain silent.
