Programme 3: Rehearsing the Chronicle
This programme explores historical trauma through processes of filmmaking and the use of cinema as a means of reconstructing narratives. It invites audiences to consider how the past is remembered, interpreted, and passed on.
The programme consists of two experimental documentaries: Narrative (2025) and Double-Layered Town / Making a Song to Replace Our Positions / 二重のまち／交代地のうたを編む (2019).
It also includes a keynote lecture by Koyo Yamash*ta, titled “Between Political and Ultra-personal: Exploring the Duality in Post-1960s Japanese Cinema.” The lecture examines the transformation of Japanese society and cinema after the 1960s, tracing a shift from political activism and underground culture towards individualism, political disengagement, and consumer culture. It asks how these changes became visible in filmmaking and how they have shaped contemporary Japanese cinema.

Synopsis: Fifteen years after the 2010 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Bangkok, survivors and bereaved families share their experiences through workshops and a staged courtroom trial. Combining testimony, research, and performance, the film tries to imagine possible paths towards truth, justice, and state accountability.
■ Double Layered Town / Making a Song to Replace Our Positions |『 二重のまち／交代地のうたを編む 』
Japan / Haruka Komori and Natsumi Seo / 2019 / 79 min
Japanese with Thai and English subtitles
Synopsis: Four travellers visit Rikuzentakata, a coastal city being rebuilt after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. They listen to residents’ stories and later recite and perform them, creating overlapping layers between the image of the city before and after the disaster, and between the memories of local people and those of visitors.
