What happens when the most powerless gets paid by God to wreak vengeance upon the world that had so tormented him? What happens when downtrodden cook Daniel who as a boy had been pimped out by his mum to a nasty gang pandering to international paedophiles, suddenly wins the lottery?
Simultaneously brutal and sensitive, furious yet funny and extremely disturbing, ‘Moneyslapper’ is not like any movie you’ve ever seen. The satire, the s*x and violence are outrageous and explicit, but surely not disproportionate, considering the Philippines’ pain and humiliation under repeated colonial invasion and oppression. From the very first scene, you’ll find it either absolutely riveting or utterly off-putting as three colonially garbed men—Spanish, American and Japanese, stick lit incense sticks into the va**na of a native woman splayed and bound on a sacrificial altar. Visually intense with a wonderful score and sound design that let you know you’re in a Pinoy Western of a cowboy returning home for vengeance. Love the moth halos around the plaster saints that line the path to the heroine’s parents’ Very Catholic House—all that’s missing is a fat Southeast Asian gecko slurping them (the insects) up. The script is extraordinary in its storytelling and sensitivity, bringing us at last to the choice of forgiveness and generosity or revenge and tyranny, when we ourselves thereby become the tyrant. Sorry, no Thai subtitles, and not recommended for viewers under 18.

What happens when the most powerless gets paid by God to wreak vengeance upon the world that had so tormented him? What happens when downtrodden cook Daniel who as a boy had been pimped out by his mum to a nasty gang pandering to international paedophiles, suddenly wins the lottery?
Simultaneously brutal and sensitive, furious yet funny and extremely disturbing, ‘Moneyslapper’ is not like any movie you’ve ever seen. The satire, the s*x and violence are outrageous and explicit, but surely not disproportionate, considering the Philippines’ pain and humiliation under repeated colonial invasion and oppression. From the very first scene, you’ll find it either absolutely riveting or utterly off-putting as three colonially garbed men—Spanish, American and Japanese, stick lit incense sticks into the va**na of a native woman splayed and bound on a sacrificial altar. Visually intense with a wonderful score and sound design that let you know you’re in a Pinoy Western of a cowboy returning home for vengeance. Love the moth halos around the plaster saints that line the path to the heroine’s parents’ Very Catholic House—all that’s missing is a fat Southeast Asian gecko slurping them (the insects) up. The script is extraordinary in its storytelling and sensitivity, bringing us at last to the choice of forgiveness and generosity or revenge and tyranny, when we ourselves thereby become the tyrant. Sorry, no Thai subtitles, and not recommended for viewers under 18.

After the start of the war on Gaza and 43 horrific days working round the clock under constant bombardment in the emergency rooms of Al Shifa and Al Ahli hospitals, British-Palestinian reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah, emerged to find himself as a face of Palestinian resistance.
With news footage of him pale and shell-shocked reverberating around the world, Ghassan Abu Sittah was a first-hand witness to medicide. He spoke of a catalogue of horrors from lacerated bodies, to amputations without anesthetics, orphaned children with no surviving family, and the deliberate targeting of medical and health services as an Israeli weapon of war.
This was Ghassan’s sixth and most horrific Gaza “war”. Why does he do it? Where does he find the strength to face it again and again? How does it impact his family? How do they process the risks he takes? The answer lies simply in their shared passion: Palestine, a passion they articulate through their support of his perilous humanitarian work.
Filmmakers Carol Mansour and Muna Khalidi, close friends of the Abu Sittahs, share that same passion. They were waiting anxiously for Ghassan to emerge from Gaza, following a long and terrifying journey through the night, to meet him in Amman. Determined to capture his raw emotions, they began filming him the moment he arrived through the door. Following him to Beirut, Amman, London, and Kuwait, they and he explore their common State of Passion.

Can an alcoholic police chief and a traumatized black cop save the sleepy tobacco-growing town of Marlow from vampire zombie space invaders? This lovingly made o**y of horror clichés with its flying saucers, celebrity vampires and white nightie maiden in a field is good gory fun. The ‘overhead shot’ of the ‘cultivated’ rows of carpet weave is almost as delicious as the flapping bats on strings and, yes, you’re meant to see the strings. If that bothers you, then it’s not your cup of tea. The whole point is to literally overkill, even if the black and white decision to enable the retro look has removed the intensity of the blood being freely spilt. The art department and the sound designer clearly had a ball. Some nice lines: “When I was ten, vampires exploded my mum.”; “You can’t shoot people just because they have a white face.”; “You plan to suck this man?”—“I plan to suck him dry.”; “Punctured neck and jugular, yet the heart still ticks.” This last is spoken by the coroner, who (spoiler alert) is promptly eaten. The half-man vampire (literally cut in half at the torso) is pretty awesome too. Great date movie to find out if he/she/it has a sense of fun. Alas, no Thai subtitles but the visual monstrosities make it easy enough to follow.
