PLAYTIME - Jacques Tati 🎬 Wednesday, August 12th

Jacques Tati spent years and nearly bankrupted himself building "Tativille" a sprawling, glass-and-steel mockup of modern Paris, just so he could let it slowly swallow his beloved Monsieur Hulot whole.

Playtime isn't really a comedy about a man getting lost in an airport, a trade fair, and a nightclub. It's a comedy about us. About the sleek, reflective, faintly absurd world we built for ourselves, and how ridiculous it looks the moment someone actually tries to live in it.

JOUR DE FÊTE (1949) 🎈 Before Hulot, before the pipe and the too-short trousers, there was François — a scatterbrained postman in a sleepy French village, about to have his whole worldview rearranged by a traveling fair and a newsreel about American postal efficiency.

This was Jacques Tati's first feature, and you can already see everything he'd spend the rest of his career refining. It's Tati before he became Tati — looser, sunnier, and just as sharp-eyed about the world we keep building for ourselves.

Maryam Touzani's new film comes into town! And if The Blue Caftan (2022) broke your heart, this one might just finish the job.

CALLE MÁLAGA follows a Moroccan woman who travels to Spain to find her estranged son, only to discover a life she was never part of. It's a film about distance: emotional, geographical, generational — and Touzani shoots it with the same quiet precision that made her one of the most important voices in contemporary Arab cinema.
