The critics consensus on Rotten Tomatoes says of the film:
"Achingly human in its depiction of immigrant struggles, Souleymane's Story asks us to witness, understand, and grant empathy to all."

September is here, it's that back to school/ start new classes and projects time. And it's the beginning of a new season of films at the Letchworth FilmClub!
We kick off with the Swiss/German 2026 film 'Late Shift'. It's a tense watch as we follow a dedicated nurse on an understaffed hospital ward.

Brian Eggert's review as reproduced on Rotten Tomatoes sums it up nicely:
"A moving, fast-paced film that will leave you wanting to give your healthcare provider a hug."

Our last film of the season is a real gem. 'All We Imagine as Light' came top in Sight and Sound magazine's 50 best films of 2024. Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian gave it 5 stars and in his review wrote:
"It is both dreamlike and like waking up from a dream. This is a glorious film."
And Rotten Tomatoes' critics consensus said:
"Capturing the here and now of modern India with the spontaneity of a candid photograph, All We Imagine as Light is a lustrous achievement......."
We hope you're able to join us at the screening on Sunday night.

This month's film is unusual; a Chinese neo-noir crime drama. Kevin Maher in The Times (UK), and quoted on the Rotten Tomatoes website wrote:

"It’s an often surreal, disquieting film, beautifully shot in shadow and rain, and with an unwavering, historically accurate commitment to cigarette smoking (almost nonstop, and even in between mouthfuls of noodles)."

7.45pm at the Broadway Cinema on Sunday, hope you can make it.

This Sunday's FilmClub screening is a rare opportunity to see James Dean on the big screen. We're showing the 1955 Hollywood classic 'East of Eden' directed by Elia Kazan and starring, along with Dean, Julie Harris and Raymond Massey.

Hope to see you there.

Our first film comes from Japan. 'Evil Does Not Exist' was directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi and is set in a rural community outside Tokyo.

The Critics' Consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads:

"Evil Does Not Exist stands on the battle lines between modern civilization and the natural world, offering a perspective that's as quietly measured as it is entrancing".

Hope you can make it.

Our next FilmClub screening is on Sunday evening when we will be showing 'Bird' (2024) directed by the award winning British Director, Andrea Arnold. The film is set in Arnold's native north Kent and stars Barry Keoghan, Franz Rogowski and new comer Nykiya Adams.

On Rotten Tomatoes the critics' consensus states:
"Director Andrea Arnold strikes a coming-of-age chord through Nykiya Adam's moving performance, marrying fantasy and reality to the dizzying end"

Sounds good to me!
