This month's film is unusual; a Chinese neo-noir crime drama. Kevin Maher in The Times (UK), and quoted on the Rotten Tomatoes website wrote:

"It’s an often surreal, disquieting film, beautifully shot in shadow and rain, and with an unwavering, historically accurate commitment to cigarette smoking (almost nonstop, and even in between mouthfuls of noodles)."

7.45pm at the Broadway Cinema on Sunday, hope you can make it.

We have two screenings in March, the first on Sunday 1 March, the second on Sunday 15 March.

Our first film comes from Japan. 'Evil Does Not Exist' was directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi and is set in a rural community outside Tokyo.

The Critics' Consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads:

"Evil Does Not Exist stands on the battle lines between modern civilization and the natural world, offering a perspective that's as quietly measured as it is entrancing".

Hope you can make it.

"Director Andrea Arnold strikes a coming-of-age chord through Nykiya Adam's moving performance, marrying fantasy and reality to the dizzying end"

Sounds good to me!

*Happy New Year to all you cineastes*

Our first screening of 2026 is on Sunday 4 January when we will be showing "How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies". From Thailand, it's a bitter sweet comedy drama about legacy and inheritance. Liked by critics and the public alike it's one not to miss.

FilmClub screening on 2 November is our first classic of the season. 'Tokyo Story' directed by Jasujiro Ozu and released in 1953 is a tale of complex family relationships. FilmClub's October screening 'The Room Next Door' is the first English language film directed by the award winning Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar ('Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown', 'All About My Mother', 'Talk to Her'). It stars two of today's great screen actors; Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore. Barry Levitt of the Daily Beast in a review of the film is quoted on Rotten Tomatoes as saying:
"A gorgeous film about the unbreakable bonds of friendship. It’s slower and more contemplative than what we’ve come to expect from Pedro Almodóvar, yet this bold new avenue feels like a perfect fit".
