Hailed as “The cosiest cinema in Leeds” upon opening the Picture House has been in constant operation since 1914. The programme features a rich mixture of traditional arthouse films, key cross over titles and a varied array of special events delivered in collaboration with a strong selection of partner organisations including Leeds International Film Festival, Leeds Young Film Festival and the University of Leeds.

The lovely Nat and John from Let's Dance came in for a meeting today. Nat made our heritage dreams come true by expressing lots of our most interesting history in beautifully designed signs, like the one she's holding here. If you've not had a look around our building yet to admire and learn from these signs, come take a look!

John and Nat have both done so much wonderful design and website work for us over the years, so if you're looking for people with expertise in these areas, we highly recommend them!

Our full summer family programme is now online, including new favourites like Toy Story 5, classics like Muppet Treasure Island, shadow puppet workshops, and a special Christopher Nibble puppet performance as part of our puppet season 🎬

On this day in 1928, Warner Brothers released the first all-talking synchronised sound film, Lights of New York! 'Talkies' then became so popular with audiences that by 1930 Hollywood was almost exclusively producing them instead of silent films.

However, not everyone was quite so enthused; Photoplay editor James Quirk said, "The 'talking picture' will be made practical, but it will never supersede the picture without sound. It will lack the subtlety and suggestion of vision—that vision which, deprived of voice to ears of flesh, intones undisturbed the symphonies of the soul."

"In a scarily nutty world, I can’t overstate my gratitude that the cinema I work in, Hyde Park Picture House, and the whole of Leeds Heritage Theatres (so Leeds Grand Theatre and City Varieties Music Hall too) have become nut-free venues."
