Draycott Community Cinema

Draycott Community Cinema For film fanatics and occasional viewers alike, our community cinema is here for all dwellers of Draycott, Rodney Stoke and the surrounding hamlets.

Draycott Community Cinema has been brought together by a few locals who share a love for cinema. This small group of individuals have managed to create an inclusive and welcoming space for film enthusiasts in the community and beyond. By pooling their resources and passion, they look to establish a cinema that not only showcases a diverse range of films but also fosters a sense of belonging among

its members. Unlike most other community cinemas, it opens its' doors to all ages and welcomes suggestions for well loved films, for old, young and family events. With some very special events planned too, this new venture is already proven its a lovely and relaxed social event. The committee is always looking for new members and of course hugely value the support from our volunteers at every event. If you're interested in helping out in any way, please dont hesitate to email us.

A huge thank you to Mick & Lori at The Strawberry Special Pub for putting on a fab summer of skittles, a great party to finish and for the generous donation to our community cinema.

DCC COMMITTEE REVIEW: The outcome of this fast paced tale of an undersized ungulate winning the day against all odds - never mind the opposition his own Roar Ball teammates threw huge bodies and obstacles his way - was pretty much a forgone conclusion.

But this diminutive goat didn't only have big dreams. He wore shocking pink and lime green trainers, had streetwise moves accompanied by a rap soundtrack and lots of hoodie wearing loyal friends. To add some jeopardy he also had to compete on hot rocks and ice floes all the while being managed by a smarmy double crossing warthog sporting agent. Also his rent was long overdue... So it was a tough, exciting battle to get that winning ball finally into the basket.

DCC COMMITTEE REVIEW: Even though this film ended happily it transpired that the problems of an estranged couple combined with stand up comedy do not make for a winning formula - see below how our discerning Draycott audience voted. Overheard comments included "That's not a comedy club I'll ever return to" and 'It meandered".

So we've taken these negative votes and criticisms on board (as well as on our sensitive chins), instructed the AI-algorithm-film-choice-generating-Bot to steer clear of 'meandering comedy clubs' and will look forward to our next screening - 'Send Help' - which combines 2 battling coworkers with a desert island....

THE GOAT: An all-animal, action-comedy animation.

Rollerball is the name of the game - fast, furious and full-contact. Will is a little goat with big dreams and he wants to join the Pros who are much bigger and stronger than him.

Will he survive? - probably, he has to live up to the film title after all, but the fun is in the noisy, chaotic transition from Underdog(goat?) to Topdog(goat?).

Saturday 22 August 2pm. Running time 2hrs incl. interval.

Tickets £2. Accompanying adult free. Available from Draycott Community Store, online or at the door.

DCC COMMITTEE REVIEW: 'Hoppers' - A once peaceful beaver pond becomes a 3-way battle ground fought over by feisty, animal loving, well meaning Mandy, her adversary the ambitious, local, construction mad mayor, and a power-hungry, self-crowned caterpillar (Monarch species - now that's clever, Pixar!).

Inevitably it all becomes, noisy, messy and ridiculously complicated. Sure, we all went along with the hi-tech brain transference (hopping) but the flying shark was literally well over the top. However, 'Pragmatism' ended up the final winner - Mandy discovers not all animals are adorable, the mayor finally understands the advantages of working together by rerouting his precious bridge, and the caterpillar...? Sorry, this committee member can't remember what happened to the caterpillar...

Suffice to say the beavers get to quietly continue with their relentless dam building and Pixar succeeds, as only they can, in not just entertaining audiences of every age but presenting valuable lessons for us all without getting too preachy or dissolving into syrupy sentimentality.

DCC COMMITTEE REVIEW: It would take until the next Draycott screening ('Is This Thing On?' August 21st , 8pm) to explain the plot of 'The Sting' but your committee thoroughly enjoyed watching it unfold right up to the unexpected ending.

Basically, all you need to know is that the Bad-Baddies (mobsters easily identified by their expensive overcoats) were outwitted by the Good-Baddies (loveable con artists - cheeky grins and an ability to run fast, hounded by the FBI but hell bent on avenging a murdered friend) in a cinematically stylish way.

Colourful characters and a snappy script combined with the joyful Joplin soundtrack to lighten up the deliberately drab Depression era cinema-photography. Every 1930s cliche made an appearance here - spats and sharp pin stripes, big-hearted broads and beaten-up Buicks, flat caps and Homburg hats (even indoors!). Toothpicks were chewed, fancy wallets emptied, decks shuffled and dealt, drinks endlessly poured and, inevitably, shots were fired. Cheating, from both sides, was the game and those who got found out ended up in the morgue.

Eventually it all made perfectly satisfying sense, Redford and Newman justified their Classic status and the credits were mercifully short.

More like this? - (Films, not excruciating reviews!) let us know with a 'like' or, even better, a 'comment'.
