A poor and naive W***y Wonka has ambitions to open a chocolate shop, to celebrate and share the wonderful recipes that his mother created. Coerced into staying at a boarding house and working for free at the owner’s launderette, Wonka befriends Noodle, one of many orphans who are effectively enslaved to the owner. This injustice further inspires him to fulfil his dreams and liberate his new friends. However, in a city renowned for its chocolate, he soon discovers that the industry is run by a cartel of three greedy chocolatiers, who bribe a chocoholic police chief into enforcing strict rules that prohibit any new producers entering the market.

A Real Pain (2024) (15)

1hr 30mins

Two cousins, David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin), as close as brothers, attempt to heal their generational trauma and their relationship with each other by flying out to Poland to visit their late grandmother’s house. They join a group on a Jewish heritage tour, a highly emotional and revelatory journey. David and Benji are at opposite ends of the emotional spectrum. The former is a diligent micro-manager of his pain. The latter is charismatic, but volatile; so much of an active listener that he’ll cry out, “Oh snap!”, when a group member shares that he’s a survivor of the genocide in Rwanda.

Director & Writer: Jesse Eisenberg
Stars: Kieran Culkin, Jesse Eisenberg, Olha Bosova

As they travel in search of dry land, Cat has to overcome his fear of the water and all the animals have to show trust and courage to work together to survive. This touching animation reflects on the fragility of our world and the importance of friendship and community.

Friday 17th April, 8pm

The Lost King (2022) (12)

1hr 48mins

Based on a true story, amateur historian Phillipa Langley defies the stodgy academic establishment in her dedicated campaigning to discover King Richard III’s remains, which were lost for over 500 years. Drawn to this figure because of the way Shakespeare monsterises his disability – an outward sign of inward sin – Langley, who has ME, also feels sidelined, dismissed and misunderstood. Her obsession is further sparked by visions and conversations with Richard III (Harry Lloyd), who looks exactly like the actor in the local Shakespeare production.

Director: Stephen Frears
Stars: Sally Hawkins, Shonagh Price, Harry Lloyd, Steve Coogan, Helen Katamba

Doors open at 7pm, with film starting at 8pm.

FRIDAY 13 MARCH
8PM

I SWEAR
Cert 15; 2hrs

A terrifically warm and generous film about real-life activist John Davidson, who has Tourette syndrome, with its tics, compulsive behaviour patterns and random obscene shouts. He was awarded an MBE in 2019 for his work educating the nation about the condition since he first exhibited its symptoms as a teenager. I Swear contains a great performance from Robert Aramayo, full of intelligence and charm, and it raises relevant questions about the overdiagnosis debate surrounding conditions such as ADHD and autism, as well as the larger tonal point of how, when and whether to laugh at John, or with him."

Bullied and punished at school as he becomes symptomatic in his teens, we then see the adult John, sweet-natured and stoic, who gets punched in clubs and is brutally hospitalised for yelping at a girl in the in the street. Excellent performances from Shirley Henderson as his mum Heather, who can’t cope, Maxine Peake as the mental health nurse who takes him in, and Peter Mullan as community centre worker Tommy, give strength to the wonderful spirit of this film.

The BBFC has given the film a 15 certificate, for "very strong language, brief violence, s*x references ...which are primarily used in the context of the neurological condition".

Director: Kirk Jones
Stars: Robert Aramayo, Maxine Peak, Peter Mullan

Doors, and bar, open at 7.00pm; film starts at 8pm
