Cambridge K1 Cohousing at Marmalade Lane

Cambridge K1 Cohousing at Marmalade Lane Cambridge K1 Cohousing. Living the dream in Marmalade Lane! The building also has two amenity rooms and three spare bedrooms for members guests.

K1 Cohousing on Marmalade Lane is a multi-generational cohousing community in Orchard Park, Cambridge. Cohousing means that the community was central to the design of both the site as a whole and the individual homes. We share a common house for regular meals (pre Covid-19!), watch films, have parties or just get together and chat. Our extensive communal garden and lane, are where our children hav

e lots of space to run around, the allotment group grow food, games are played, and our flower meadow gardeners get creative. Or we can just sit in the sun and relax! Our 42 homes are fully occupied and we have 100 plus residents (adults and children) Cohousing is not unique across the world, but is rare in the UK. If you are interested in this scheme as a potential future resident do email [email protected] or message us via this page.

We held our first 'Beating the Bounds' at Marmalade Lane last week. We walked the perimeter of our site beating the ground with willow branches. We sung our own version of 'An Acre of Land', learnt about Roman roads, king's hunting grounds and the amazing diversity of trees that we have either planted or that have self seeded on our perimeter. Sorry no photo, but you can imagine that we did look a bit odd beating the ground with willow!

Our resident lepidopterist, Adrian, reached a milestone this week when they trapped their 100th moth specimen at Marmalade Lane. Adrian has set a light trap each evening since the end of February and attracts 3-5 species of moth most nights. The non-lepidopterist residents of Marmalade Lane are learning a lot about these beautiful creatures thanks to Adrian's photos and extensive knowledge of the moth's food and habitat and why they're in our communal garden. Moths on show here are Muslin, Spectacle, Emperor & Lime Hawk.

The chickens escaped their coop today. All seven hens explored the kidsโ€™ play area, including the climbing frame and the swings. Luckily two members of the hen group were able to encourage the hens back into their space with the help of bird seed. ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿฅš

Did you spot us in The Times today? Our lovely neighbours Helen and Berry were interviewed about Marmalade Lane and members of a Danish cohousing community were also asked about their experience. Weโ€™ve got 11 cohousing schemes in the UK but Denmark has more than 400 communities. Hereโ€™s the article:

The U3AC Movingmaking Group has made a wonderful film about cohousing at Marmalade Lane and we hosted its premiere recently. We watched the movie together, enjoyed tea and cake, and had a Q&A afterwards. Here's the movie for you to enjoy too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lo2iYqmBXxU

Several of us took part in Big Garden Birdwatch last Sunday and gathered on the patio outside the Common House. We spotted 18 house sparrows, 7 starlings, 3 blue t**s, 2 great t**s, 1 robin, 1 collared dove and 1 magpie. A big flock of Redwing also flew over but weren't counted.
