Following yesterday’s awards announcement at the Locarno Film Festival, two films from our 2025 European Work in Progress selection came away with major honors!

First up A MARGEM DO RIO, directed by Enock Carvalho and Matheus Farias, captured the prestigious Special Jury Prize following its premiere in the International Competition. The project previously earned the EWIP D-Facto Studios Award.

Also taking home an award was PARADEISA, directed by Marleen Valien, which won over audiences across the festival and received the Locarno Kids Award la Mobiliare.

Congratulations to both projects on these amazing achievements.

The Call for Entries is officially open for the second edition of European Work in Progress (EWIP) in its new home, Hamburg.

Taking place from September 28 to September 30, 2026, the event is held in collaboration with FILMFEST HAMBURG INDUSTRY, the MOIN Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, and with the support of the Creative Europe MEDIA Programme.

The final deadline to submit your project is August 17, 2026. Due to the high number of submissions, the evaluation will be conducted across two distinct rounds. Early submission is highly recommended to ensure timely review.

Selection Timeline:

First Selection Meeting:July 17, 2026
Second Selection Meeting: August 24, 2026

Up to 25 feature-length projects—including fiction, animation, and documentary—will be selected to present exclusively to international sales agents, distributors, festival programmers, and key industry professionals.

Selected projects will also compete for EWIP Awards from a total prize pool of €100,000.

Eligibility Criteria:

Format: Feature-length fiction, animation, or documentary currently in production or post-production.

European Involvement: Must involve at least one European production company.

African Focus: Up to three projects from African production companies will be selected. These projects do not require European co-production.

Footage Requirements: A minimum of 10 minutes of actual shooting material (unedited or edited scenes) must be provided. Teasers and trailers are not eligible. 20 to 30 minutes of excerpts or a rough cut is preferred.

Language: All footage must have English subtitles (German-language films are exempt).

Projects must have footage available and be seeking final financing support or strategic partners for international distribution.

We are excited to annouce that two films from the 2025 edition of EWIP have just been selected as part of the Cannes Film Festival Un Certain Regard section:

I'LL BE GONE IN JUNE, directed by Katharina Rivilis
ELEPHANTS IN THE FOG, directed by Abinash Bikram Shah

Both films will be competing for the Prix un certain regard as well as the Camera d’Or. We'd like to congratulate both films and crews!

Now its the start of a new funding initiative by our EWIP-Partner TFL that might be of interest to You : the TFL Audience Design Fund 2026, whose call is open untile 15th January.
The fund is dedicated to international co-productions at the post-production stage - feature films, creative documentaries, and animation projects over 60 minutes. It supports two films at the distribution stage through the implementation of innovative audience engagement and outreach strategies.
In 2026, two grants of €45,000 each will be awarded to companies submitting an eligible film, combined with mandatory Audience Design consultancies running from March to June 2026.
