To mark the centenary of Buster Keaton’s *The General*, the renowned silent film conductor and composer Timothy Brock has created a new arrangement, co-commissioned by Babylon, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival and Ensemble Concordanze.

Long before CGI or green screens, Keaton performed all his own death-defying stunts. Whether he is running along the roof of a moving steam engine, chopping wood on a moving cowcatcher, or narrowly avoiding a stray railroad tie, there are no camera tricks—it is pure, raw physical dedication

Unforgettable is The Most Expensive Shot in Silent History: Keaton insisted on authentic realism. (Attention Spoiler)
For the film’s climax, he built a real timber bridge and drove an actual, full-sized steam locomotive across it as it burned, crashing it into the river bed below. It remains one of the most spectacularly expensive and iconic practical effects ever captured on film

Die faszinierende Lebensgeschichte von Yayoi Kusama – die erfolgreichsten zeitgenössischen Künstlerin der Welt, die am 14. August 2026 im Alter von 97 Jahren verstorben ist.

Der Film zeigt eindringlich, wie sie Traumata, Sexismus, Rassismus und psychische Krankheiten überwunden hat, um mit ihren weltberühmten „Infinity Mirror Rooms“ und den ikonischen Punkten (Polka Dots) die Kunstwelt zu revolutionieren.

Andy Warhol und Claes Oldenburg schätzten sie – so sehr, dass sie Elemente ihrer avantgardistischen Kunst kopierten und damit Erfolg selbst hatten.
Doch bis die japanische Künstlerin Yayoi Kusama (* 22. März 1929) mit ihren radikalen, künstlerischen Visionen selbst weltweite Aufmerksamkeit erlangte, musste sie unzählige Hürden überwinden. Anfang der 1950er Jahre wagte sie ohne Beziehungen und mit gebrochenem Englisch den Sprung aus dem konservativen Japan nach New York.
Dort traf sie auf eine männerdominierte Kunstszene: Für Frauen gab es höchstens Gruppenausstellungen, eine Einzelausstellung war männlichen Künstlern vorbehalten. Das Trauma, während des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Japan aufzuwachsen, das Leben in einer dysfunktionalen Familie, Sexismus und Rassismus im Kunstbetrieb und nicht zuletzt eine psychische Erkrankung machten sie stets zur Außenseiterin.
Allerdings mit enormen avantgardistischen Potential und großer Medienwirksamkeit: Mit ihren „Infinity Nets“ und „Infinity Mirror Rooms“, mit öffentlichen Nacktperformances gegen den Vietnamkrieg, mit der als Happening gefeierten ersten Hochzeit von Homosexuellen, lange bevor dies legal wurde.
