ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND • 7:15PM TONIGHT

Many often wonder whether it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. In the late 90’s, director Michel Gondry explored the latter, going so far as to remove the love and let only the loss remain. Springing originally from a conversation with French artist Pierre Bismuth, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind began life as a social artistic experiment. Formal letters would be delivered to individuals informing them that their ex-partners, former friends or family members had undergone a procedure to have them fully erased from the client’s memories. They were informed not to engage, and proceed as if they never knew them. This idea developed further into the basis for the film, and once master surrealist screenwriter Charlie Kaufman was brought on board to pen the script, along with comic superstar Jim Carrey and heartthrob Kate Winslet, the wheels had been set in motion to deliver the most melancholic permutation on the romantic comedy ever conceived – a movie that illustrates the regret and guilt of a failed relationship and its waning memories as much as it does the joy and love of one.
