THE PLAZA THEATRE The Plaza Theatre is an iconic landmark, offering so much more than just a boutique film experience. A nostalgic glimpse of The Plaza's beginning.

"Hillhurst was subdivided in 1906, annexed to the City in 1907, and grew as Calgary's population boomed prior to World War I. Many services were needed in the working class suburb and businesses sprang up to meet the demand. One such establishment, a garage, opened for business in 1929. In the mid-thirties, the original use changed. Jim

Finney, who had recently moved to the area, recalled the transformation:

"'I watched the Plaza Theatre being built in the early thirties. It was renovated from an old garage. We used to spend all our Saturdays there. The cost of a show was 10 cents. Half the time we'd sneak into the place. The first guy had the dime and he'd have to go in and open the back door and let the rest of us in because we didn't have the money.'

"The rejuvenated garage opened as a theatre in 1935 and is a good example of a building which has responded to the emerging demands of a community. A full house is common in this theatre which often screens old film classics. The building features stucco cladding in a facade treatment which owes as much stylistically to the western 'false front' tradition as the Modern movement, with its moulded parapet and taut plastic use of the building skin. "The Plaza Theatre's long and varied life adds a special dimension to the atmosphere of the vibrant Kensington area of northwest Calgary."

TWO new films on our screen THIS WEEK at The Plaza!

Steven Spielberg’s DISCLOSURE DAY places Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor at the centre of a global event that forces humanity to confront the unknown. Ghibli Fest continues with weekend matinees of TALES FROM EARTHSEA, returning for its 20th anniversary.

THE INVITE gathers Olivia Wilde, Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton for a dinner party that quickly slips out of control. OUR HERO, BALTHAZAR follows a young New Yorker whose attempt to help a stranger sends him toward Texas.

Australian supernatural horror LEVITICUS follows two teenage boys pursued by a force unleashed by the community trying to change them, while THE SHEEP DETECTIVES leaves one final mystery for an unusually observant flock.

THIS WEEK'S SHOWTIMES AT THE PLAZA!

THE INVITE: Pre-opening screenings July 9th, Olivia Wilde directs and stars alongside Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton in a dinner-party comedy where a bored couple invite their magnetic upstairs neighbours over, and one evening starts pushing every polite boundary in the room.

OUR HERO, BALTHAZAR: A prep-school teenager follows a troubling online thread from New York to Texas, convinced he has found a chance to matter. Oscar Boyson’s uneasy debut turns a rescue fantasy into something far less controllable.

GIRLS LIKE GIRLS: Set in 2006 Oregon, Hayley Kiyoko’s feature debut follows Coley after the death of her mother, as a move to a small town brings her into Sonya’s orbit. A summer of uncertainty gradually becomes something harder to hide.

LEVITICUS: In Adrian Chiarella’s Australian supernatural horror, two teenage boys are pushed into a church ritual meant to “cure” their feelings. Instead, something violent answers back, taking the shape of desire itself.

THE SHEEP DETECTIVES: When a beloved shepherd is found dead, the flock he raised on bedtime mysteries decides the humans are moving too slowly. Murder, village gossip, and farmyard logic all end up in the same field.

BACKROOMS: EVERYTHING MUST GO EDITION: Kane Parsons returns to A24’s liminal horror with an expanded cut featuring new footage and deeper corners of the maze. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve move through dead air, storefront doors, and rooms that refuse to end.

THE WIND RISES: Hayao Miyazaki turns from fantasy creatures to flying machines in this Studio Ghibli portrait of Jiro Horikoshi. His dreams of beautiful aircraft take shape in the shadow of war, making this one of Miyazaki’s most quietly devastating films.
