🎬 𝐒𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐄 𝐄𝐍 𝐒𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐄

La misteriosa mirada del flamenco (The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo), film du réalisateur chilien Diego Céspedes, sort en salles en Belgique ce mercredi 13 mai. Le film sera projeté au Cinéma Galeries (Bruxelles), au Cinema ZED-Vesalius (Leuven), au Cinéma Caméo (Namur), au Churchill (Liège) et au Sphinx (Gent).

Présenté en 2025 au BRIFF, le film y a remporté le Grand Prix de la Compétition Internationale. La même année, il a aussi reçu le prix « Un Certain Regard » du Festival de Cannes.

Après ce parcours remarqué, Diego Céspedes intégrera le Jury officiel du Festival de Cannes 2026.

Synopsis : Début des années 1980, dans le désert chilien. Lidia, 11 ans, grandit au sein d’une famille flamboyante qui a trouvé refuge dans un cabaret, aux abords d’une ville minière. Quand une mystérieuse maladie mortelle commence à se propager, une rumeur affirme qu’elle se transmettrait par un simple regard. La communauté devient rapidement la cible des peurs et fantasmes collectifs.

🎬 𝐈𝐍 𝐃𝐄 𝐁𝐈𝐎𝐒𝐂𝐎𝐎𝐏

La misteriosa mirada del flamenco (The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo), de nieuwe film van de Chileense regisseur Diego Céspedes, verschijnt op woensdag 13 mei in de Belgische bioscopen. De film wordt vertoond in Cinéma Galeries (Brussel), Cinema ZED-Vesalius (Leuven), Cinéma Caméo (Namen), Churchill (Luik) en Sphinx (Gent).

De film werd in 2025 vertoond op het Brussels International Film Festival, waar hij de Grote Prijs van de Internationale Competitie won. Datzelfde jaar kreeg hij ook de prijs “Un Certain Regard” op het Festival de Cannes.

Na dit opvallende parcours maakt Diego Céspedes bovendien deel uit van de officiële jury van het Festival van Cannes 2026.

Synopsis: Begin jaren 1980, in de Chileense woestijn. De 11-jarige Lidia groeit op in een flamboyante familie die onderdak heeft gevonden in een cabaret aan de rand van een mijnstad. Wanneer een mysterieuze dodelijke ziekte zich begint te verspreiden, doet het gerucht de ronde dat ze via een simpele blik wordt overgedragen. De gemeenschap wordt al snel het doelwit van collectieve angsten en fantasieën.

🎬 La réalisatrice belge Caroline Strubbe est mise à l’honneur au Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) du 7 au 14 mai avec Trying to Forget to Remember, une trilogie tournée sur près de vingt ans : “Lost Persons Area” (2009), “I’m the Same, I’m an Other” (2013), “The Silent Treatment” (2025).

Elle y explore les traces du silence, de la culpabilité et de la mémoire à travers les trajectoires entrelacées de Tess, une jeune flamande et Szabolcs, un travailleur migrant hongrois. Portée par les mêmes interprètes principaux, la trilogie montre Tess grandir à l’écran, tandis que Szabolcs avance sous le poids de ce qu’il a commis. Chaque film peut être vu indépendamment; ensemble, ils retracent un parcours sincère autour du déracinement, de la complicité et de la possibilité, fragile, du pardon.

✨ Nous sommes heureux d’annoncer que “The Silent Treatment”, dernier volet de cette trilogie, sera présenté en avant-première au BRIFF, en présence de Caroline Strubbe pour une rencontre avec le public.
“Lost Persons Area” et “I’m the Same, I’m an Other”, y seront aussi projetés en rétrospective.

Une occasion rare de (re)découvrir l’univers singulier d’une cinéaste majeure du cinéma belge contemporain.

🎬 De Belgische regisseuse Caroline Strubbe staat van 7 tot 14 mei in de schijnwerpers in het Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) met Trying to Forget to Remember, een trilogie die bijna twee decennia overspant: Lost Persons Area (2009), I’m the Same, I’m an Other (2013) en The Silent Treatment (2025).

De trilogie volgt Tess, een jong Vlaams meisje, en Szabolcs, een Hongaarse arbeidsmigrant, en verkent thema’s als stilte, schuld en herinnering. Met dezelfde acteurs in elk deel zien we Tess opgroeien op het scherm, terwijl Szabolcs verder leeft onder het gewicht van zijn daden. Samen vormen de films een indringend verhaal over ontworteling, medeplichtigheid en vergiffenis.

✨ The Silent Treatment gaat in avant-première op het BRIFF, in aanwezigheid van Caroline Strubbe. Ook de eerste twee films worden er vertoond in retrospectieve.

𝑽𝒊𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒍 de Noëlle Bastin et Baptiste Bogaert, en avant-première ce mardi 25 novembre à 18h45 au Palace, en présence des réalisateur·rice·s !

Le film sortira dans la foulée, ce mercredi 26, dans les cinémas suivants : Palace (Bruxelles), Caméo (Namur), Sauvenière (Liège), Buda (Courtrai).

𝐁𝐑𝐈𝐅𝐅 𝐎𝐧 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫 | 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲
𝐵𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑏𝑒𝑟𝑟𝑦 𝐷𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑚𝑠 by Elena Mikaberidze, presented in the Discovery “Focus Belgium” section of the BRIFF 2024, is back on screen at Bozar.

Led by the kind-hearted father Soso, a family of four starts a blueberry farm to secure their future. Living in northern Georgia near the troubled border with the Russian-backed region of Abkhazia, where new conflicts have been rumbling for 30 years, Soso—a retired engineer—joins his wife Nino and sons Giorgi and Lazare in the Georgian ‘Plant the Future’ programme to stabilize the area. Nino is haunted by war memories and hopes her children will see the world, while Soso wants to keep their bond to the land. Meanwhile, Giorgi and Lazare dream of a different life, immersed in anime and longing to visit Japan. Through hardship and hope, the family balances their present with dreams of what lies ahead.

For our 9th edition, and after a loooong period of reflection, we are changing the dates of the BRIFF: see you from 4 to 12 September 2026.

No more tough choices between watching a film or a Red Devils match, no more hesitating between enjoying the first rays of summer on a terrace or sitting in a dark cinema — we’ll let you make the most of the early summer, and we’ll be back right after the holidays!

Because this festival is yours too, we'd like to explain the main reasons behind this important change in this post.
