ECFA - European Children's Film Association

ECFA - European Children's Film Association ECFA is the organisation for all, who are interested in high quality films for children and young people.

ECFA is the organisation for all, who are interested in high quality films for children and young people: film makers, producers, promotors, distributors, exhibitors, TV-programmers, festival organizers and film educators. Audiovisual media in general and cinema in specific are a vehicle for artistic communication and for cultural transmission. Now that the world is becoming a "global village", ch

ildren and young people have more and more access to culture and those who use the cinematic media are more numerous than we can imagine. The aim of ECFA is to bring the children in contact with the great machine called cinema. ECFA offers a communication panel promoting new ways of co-operation within Europe in the fields of production, festivals, distribution, exhibition and film education. "We want to create a positive attitude towards European films for children - also in its economic and political aspects." At the moment ECFA has more than 150 members, mostly companies and organisations, coming from 40 different countries. ECFA is convinced that European films for children and young people could not only succeed, but could also find a profitable audience. Children and young people are not only the future of our society, but also an important part of it here and now, with enormous emotional, cultural and of course material needs. Since its foundation in 1988 ECFA has organized meetings and events to promote and stimulate the development of European films for children and young people.

🎬 As many of you already know, Felix Vanginderhuysen is retiring after decades of invaluable contribution to children’s and youth cinema in Europe.

Over the past months, the ECFA Board has been working intensively to secure the next chapter for the association — and we are happy to announce that ECFA has found its new home in Brussels at Filem'On - International Film Festival for Young Audiences

We would like to warmly thank Felix for his extraordinary dedication, vision, and commitment throughout all these years, as well as everyone who contributed to this transition and helped make it possible.

With Filem’on’s long-standing experience and passion for young audiences, ECFA moves forward with confidence, continuity, and renewed energy for the future of European youth cinema. 🌍✨

How about this? "Radical Children's Film and Television", edited by our Academic Committee member Noel Brown got the Best Edited Volume award for 2026 of the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies (BAFTSS). The book has been published by Edinburgh University Press and it includes lots of interesting stuff for the ECFA crowd.
As the panel commented "This book boldly extends the idea of political film and television into the unexpected, and yet immediately convincing, realm of children’s programming. Far from exhausting its topic the extensive range of contributions establishes the importance of radicalism as a key term for future investigation of children’s film and television production."
The ECFA people may not find this unexpected, by they certainly applause the book and its recognition. A special note for Barbora Kyas' chapter on children's film festivals, where a lot of ECFA members have contributed their opinions.
The book is available on digital and hardback editions. The paperback is due later this year.
