27 July 2026 - Small Things Like These (M) 2024 Ireland, 98 Min

Small Things Like These takes place over Christmas in 1985, when devoted father and coal merchant Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy) discovers startling secrets kept by the convent in his town, along with some shocking truths of his own. The film reveals truths about Ireland's Magdalene laundries -- horrific asylums run by Roman Catholic institutions from the 1820s until 1996, ostensibly to reform "fallen young women." Adapted from the Booker Prize nominated novel by Claire Keegan.

The Croydon Film Society had the privilege of enjoying a special screening of 'A Boy Called Sailboat' at Metro Cinemas Boronia.

What made the evening truly memorable was that the beautiful soundtrack was performed live by the talented Grigoryan Brothers, Slava and Leonard, as the film played.

After the screening, we were treated to a fascinating Q&A session with the film's writer and director, Cameron Nugent, who shared insights into the making of the movie.

A Boy Called Sailboat is a heartwarming film about a young boy from an immigrant family who discovers a tiny guitar and forms a special bond with it. When his grandmother asks him to write a song, he creates something truly extraordinary. The live music added an extra layer of emotion, making it a wonderful and unforgettable evening.
