City of Wellston to receive $1.5 million from Ohio Senate…

During the Wellston City Council meeting held on Thursday, June 20, Wellston Mayor Anthony Brenner was excited to share that the city has a number of grant and potential funding sources coming in the future, including funding for the historic Louvee Theater building. The most notable was potential f...

The fate of Wellston’s historic Louvee Theater has gone back and forth for quite some time, and in spite of the fact that the site has already been bid out for demolition, it appears as though there may still be hope to keep the structure standing. The Louvee was one of 33 demolition projects bid ...

The following information was sent in an email to the Wellston City Council on 1/6/23. Many more details were included in the email but this will suffice for this platform-

After being contacted by concerned business owners, citizens and The Telegram, I watched the video of the council meeting on 1/5/23. I wanted to clarify some things that were presented to the city council at this meeting.

First and foremost, we did not make the request for our building to be added to the demolition list. We were sent a letter from the Jackson County Health Dept. that stated that our building had been submitted for consideration of demolition by the City of Wellston.

After receiving this letter we had a meeting (1/24/22)with a city official that was adamant that the Louvee would be demolished and the property would be used as a parking lot.

After this, Mr.Pelletier and Scott Fout took a tour of the building and felt it was not a danger to the community (1/27/22).We decided to keep fighting to save it.

I sent city officials an email (1/31/22) with our long and short term goals per his request to prove to the city we were working to save the Louvee
I received an email stating that the plan was not detailed enough and that he didn’t feel enough progress was being made.

The building was offered to already established nonprofits in Wellston that could apply for grants to save the Louvee. They declined.

I grew tired of “beating my head against a wall” so I agreed to sign to have the Louvee demolished. It was obvious that we did not have the support needed to continue this project.
At this point, we stopped working to save it.

We were approached by a city official to buy the property after the Louvee has been demolished. Stating it would be presented to the council for purchase for a parking lot on 1/5/23. Apparently, it was not added to the agenda.

I did receive an email inviting me to come share my concerns at the beginning of the next city council meeting so that it would be on record. I have declined.

Thank you to those that have spoken to them on our behalf.

To clarify- on 1/31-as asked-we submitted our plan to the city of Wellston. After looking at our plan, city officials wanted to see more substantial work being done than we could guarantee at this time. So, we gave voluntary consent for the demolition of the building which was formerly the Louvee Theatre- the property itself was not signed over to the Land Bank.

“Choose your battles wisely. After all, life isn’t measured by how many times you stood up to fight. It’s not winning battles that makes you happy, but it’s how many times you turned away and chose to look into a better direction. Life is too short to spend it on warring. Fight only the most, most, most important ones, let the rest go.” — C. JoyBell C.

Highlights of our progress.

Today, we had a restoration contractor and Ryan Pelletier meet us at the Louvee. The contractor DOES NOT feel that the Louvee needs to be demolished. We will move forward with our plans.

This week we have established an LLC, created a board and began the paperwork for nonprofit status. John Carey reached out to us by email and has set up a meeting with us next week to explore possible options. Thank you to those that reached out to us showing your support for this project.

We will continue to share our journey with you.
