My stepmother destroyed my late mother’s prom dress that I planned to wear in her honor — but she never expected my father to teach her a lesson.
I’m 17 years old, and the most important night of my school years had finally arrived: prom.
All my life, I had dreamed of wearing my mom’s dress — the same dress she wore to her own prom.
When I was only 12, cancer took her away from me. She was everything to me.
There was no other dress I wanted to wear. I wanted to wear it in her memory, and I knew how much my mom had dreamed of seeing me at my own prom.
Years later, my dad remarried. His new wife, Stephanie, cared more about appearances than anything else.
She threw away my mom’s belongings, calling them “junk,” and replaced them with expensive furniture and flashy decorations.
The day before prom, I stood in front of the mirror, admiring myself in my mom’s dress as I carefully prepared it for the next day.
Stephanie walked in, smiled, and said:
“You can’t wear that rag! You’ll embarrass our family. YOU’LL WEAR THE DESIGNER DRESS I PICKED OUT — THE ONE THAT COST THOUSANDS!”
But I didn’t back down.
“This dress is special to me. I’m wearing it,” I told her.
The next day, just before prom, I went to change.
I reached for the garment bag, unzipped it…
And froze.
My dress was destroyed.
The seams had been ripped apart, and the satin was covered in stains, as if someone had deliberately poured coffee on it.
Then Stephanie appeared in the doorway with a smile on her face.
“Oh, you found it!”
“Did you do this? This is my mother’s dress… how could you?” I shouted, fighting back tears.
Stephanie rolled her eyes.
“I’m your mother now! Enough! YOU SHOULD HAVE THROWN THAT DRESS IN THE TRASH A LONG TIME AGO!”
My hands were shaking.
I stood there completely broken, not knowing what to do next.
