We’re stepping on up at the Walton Theatre!

As visitors may have noticed, our front stairs have been in poor repair for some time now, creating not only an eyesore, but a hazard. The Walton Theatre Preservation Association has partnered with the Village of Walton NY to replace the front steps and repair the sidewalls this August.

The existing stairs received minor repairs over a decade ago, however it’s time for a complete overhaul which is evident from the photos. Every seam between the rocks in the risers and on the treads is an opportunity for water to compromise and degrade the stairs, resulting in loosened and failing joints and stones. The front edges of the treads are also showing the effects of the weather with spalling visible down the lengths of each tread.

Beginning in mid-August, B&B Excavation and Landscaping , a local Walton company experienced in bluestone work, will remove the existing stone and concrete stairs, replacing them with 36 feet of bluestone quarried right here in Walton. The company will also be rehabilitating the stone walls on either side of the porch with fresh mortar. The local bluestone will reduce the number of joints and seams to be maintained in the future, ensuring the infrastructure is long-lasting. The stairs will be similar in construction to our neighbors at the William B. Ogden Free Library (see photo). The Theatre will remain open throughout the duration of the project which is expected to last approximately a week. Entry will be via the ramp adjacent to the front porch.

The Walton Theatre Preservation Association is a registered 501(c)(3). Donations go directly to projects that ensure the preservation and continuation of the Walton Theatre as a cultural and historic icon. Donations are gratefully accepted at https://www.waltontheatre.org/support-the-theatre.

In the beginning, concessions were not synonymous with movie theatres. Instead, moviegoers would have to either bring food in from nearby eateries or purchase from outside vendors who walked the aisles selling their treats.

It wasn’t until the 1920s that snacks started to play a starring role – Goobers, Milk Duds, Raisinets, Bob White/Sno Caps, and red-licorice were just the beginning. The number one movie snack, popcorn, grew in popularity during the Great Depression, quickly becoming the favorite that continues to fill bellies today.
