Out There: A National Parks Story - SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 AT 2:00PM

Co-presented by Western National Parks

In the centennial year of the National Park Service, a young filmmaker and his childhood friend set off on a 10,000-mile road trip through America’s national parks, leaving home with little more than a camera and a desire to understand what connects people to these wild places. What begins as a summer road trip in search of awe-inspiring landscapes becomes a seven-year odyssey that uncovers the human stories embedded in those wild places. Along the way, they meet rangers, conservationists, and everyday visitors whose lives have been shaped by the parks. Through personal stories of healing, transformation, and connection, a rich tapestry of the national park experience begins to emerge – one that reflects not just the beauty of the land, but the spirit of the people who love and protect it. Blending stunning cinematography with archival travelogues, posters, and maps, Out There: A National Parks Story is both a tribute to the enduring legacy of the parks and a call to recognize the human presence that gives them meaning. It invites us to see these places not just as landscapes, but as living stories, reflecting on our own role in their preservation.

(Dir. by Brendan Hall, 2024, USA, 75 mins., Not Rated)

Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman - MONDAY, AUGUST 31 AT 8:00PM

Get ready for hot fun in the summertime (but it’s a dry heat!) at DESERT DISASTERS Month at Mondo Mondays, featuring cheesy, sun-baked B-movies set in the deserts of your dreams … and nightmares!

“She’s too much for any man!” In this all-time ‘50s kitsch classic of epic proportions, Nancy Archer (Allison Hayes) is an affluent California housewife with a rat for a husband and a bit of a booze problem. She’s recently been released from a mental institution, and while she was away, her philandering hubbie Harry (William Hudson) has been at play, putting the moves on the town “bad girl,” Honey Parker (Yvette Vickers, Playboy’s Miss July 1959), and scheming about the day when they can get rid of Nancy and claim her fortune as their own. But Nancy is about to give everyone a BIG surprise after she encounters a stranded alien on a lonely desert highway and is zapped by its “growth ray” – a close encounter of the weird kind that sends her body into bad movie overdrive. Soon, Nancy’s size matches her rage, and the beauteous behemoth sets out to exact revenge on those who have wronged her, even if she has to wreck an entire town to do it. Decked out in a massive bedsheet bikini and a still-stylish hairdo, the 50ft. Woman is about to prove that big girls don’t cry … they get even! A legendarily hilarious slice of low-budget sci-fi camp, Attack of the 50ft. Woman is one of the most unforgettable artifacts of the 1950s – a bizarre blend of subpar special effects, alien anxiety, and feminist subtext that must be seen by any self-respecting bad movie fan!

(Dir. by Nathan Hertz, 1958, USA, 70 mins., Not Rated)

Blue Velvet - THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 AT 7:30PM 🌹👂🎙️

Part of the CINEMA ‘86 series! Join us as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of independent cinema’s greatest years with big screen presentations of some of 1986’s best American Indie films from legendary directors David Lynch, Alex Cox, Jim Jarmusch and more!

David Lynch’s acclaimed breakthrough film, a coming of age story like no other, drags naïve college student and amateur sleuth Kyle MacLachlan down a deliciously unnerving rabbit hole of voyeurism, sadomasochism, suburban depravity and good old-fashioned weirdness, and in the process, changed America cinema forever. Equal parts campy comedy, scathing social critique and demented horror film, Blue Velvet is a true original, and perhaps the iconic director’s most enduringly influential masterpiece. Fully unleashing, for the very first time, his darkly offbeat aesthetic upon a narrative buoyed by glossy Hollywood production values, Lynch manages to meld Hitchcockian suspense, surrealist imagery and a Hardy Boys plot to create an unforgettable, one-of-a-kind Grimm’s fairy tale for adults.

(Dir. by David Lynch, 1986, USA, 120 mins., Rated R)

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly - WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 AT 7:00PM 🐎

60th Anniversary! New 4K Restoration!

For three men the Civil War wasn’t hell… it was practice! By far the most ambitious, unflinchingly graphic and stylistically influential western ever made, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is a classic actioner shot through with a volatile mix of myth and realism. Screen legend Clint Eastwood (A Fistful of Dollars) returns as the squinty, cigarillo-smoking “Man with No Name,” this time teaming with two gunslingers to pursue a cache of $200,000 and letting no one, not even warring factions in a civil war, stand in their way. From sun-drenched panoramas to bold hard close-ups, exceptional camerawork captures the beauty and cruelty of the barren landscape and the hardened characters who stride unwaveringly through it. Hailed as “the best directed movie of all time” by Quentin Tarantino, this epic masterpiece and iconic example of the “spaghetti western,” was directed by the great Sergio Leone (Once Upon a Time in the West) and co-stars Lee Van Cleef (For a Few Dollars More) as Angel Eyes and Eli Wallach (The Magnificent Seven) as Tuco. Featuring a thrillingly memorable score by legendary composer Ennio Morricone. (Dir. by Sergio Leone, 1966, Italy, 179 mins., Not Rated)

New 4K restoration of the 179-minute Extended Cut from Arrow Video, using the original 2-perf Technicscope negative.

In this coming-of-age comedy/drama, starring Kevin Costner in his first leading role and produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, a group of young Texans discover that life after college isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. College is over, now real life can begin. Well, not yet. The Groovers, five college roommates in Texas, class of ’71, find that breaking up is hard to do. So, Gardner (Costner), the group’s official “Groover and Shaker”, decides that he and his buddies should chuck their worries about an imminent wedding, the Vietnam draft and crashing the working world to take off in Phil’s Caddy for a final footloose tear across the Lone Star State, headed to the Rio Grande for their last hurrah before full-blown adulthood sets in. Directed by first-time feature filmmaker Kevin Reynolds (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), based on his USC student film called Proof, Fandango also features a cast of up-and-coming ‘80s actors including Judd Nelson, Sam Robards, Elizabeth Daily, and Susy Amis.

La Bamba - WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 AT 7:30PM

Experience the incredible real-life story of LA BAMBA writer/director LUIS VALDEZ in the new documentary AMERICAN PACHUCO: THE LEGEND OF LUIS VALDEZ, opening at The Loft Cinema on Friday, September 4!

Lou Diamond Phillips electrifies in a star-making performance as influential Mexican American rocker Ritchie Valens (né Richard Valenzuela), whose meteoric rise to rock and roll fame tragically ended “the day music died” at the age of 17. La Bamba vividly chronicles Valens’ journey from farm work to San Fernando High School, where he meets his sweetheart Donna and joins a cover band, to signing with a label and recording his own songs, to tour dates in front of screaming fans… as well as the fateful “Winter Dance Party” tour, with the Big Bopper and Buddy Holly.

Niagara - SATURDAY, AUGUST 29 AT 11:00AM

Experience the greatest films from Hollywood’s Golden Age back on the big screen, every week at The Loft Cinema!

Celebrate the centennial anniversary of the ultimate movie star at MARILYN MONROE 100, featuring Hollywood Classics screenings of some of Marilyn’s best and blondest movies!

“Marilyn Monroe and Niagara – a raging torrent of emotion that even nature can’t control!” Set against the dramatic backdrop of Niagara Falls, Marilyn Monroe portrays Rose Loomis, a femme fatale possessing two of the most powerful weapons imaginable: an erotic body and an evil mind. Planning to murder her troubled husband (Joseph Cotton), Rose first uses her double-edged sword to drive him to the brink of total insanity. Then she seductively torments a series of strangers while her mysterious lover waits in the shadows. Part Technicolor noir, part overheated melodrama, Niagara remains best known as the film that transformed Marilyn Monroe from rising star to full-fledged screen phenomenon. Vastly different from the often comedic roles for which she became best known, Monroe’s intensely dramatic performance as the diabolical and scheming Rose is at once fascinating and frightening, emerging as a force of nature equal to the Falls themselves. With its lurid color palette, mounting hysteria, and spectacular location photography, Niagara occupies a fascinating space between studio drama, erotic fever dream, and killer noir thriller.
