"Ever wonder how meteorologists can tell a storm is rotating before a tornado even forms? It's Doppler radar. Instead of just showing where rain or snow is falling, Doppler radar measures the frequency shift of returning radio waves to detect how fast air is moving toward or away from the radar station - letting forecasters spot rotation inside a storm and give communities precious extra minutes of warning time.

"Every time it rains, water runs off streets, driveways, and parking lots - picking up oil, litter, pesticides, and pet waste along the way - and much of it flows straight into storm drains that lead directly to rivers, lakes, and streams, with no treatment in between. It's called stormwater runoff, and it's one of the most common (and most overlooked) sources of water pollution.

"Meet mammatus clouds - the strange, pouch-like bulges that sometimes hang from the underside of a storm cloud. They look ominous (a little alien, even), but here's the twist: mammatus clouds usually form AFTER the most severe part of a storm has passed, as cold, sinking pockets of air spill out beneath the cloud base. Dramatic sky, not necessarily a dangerous one!

September 1 marks the first day of meteorological fall!

While the calendar says fall doesn’t officially arrive until later in September, meteorologists divide the year into neat three-month seasons to make it easier to track and compare weather patterns.

A single raindrop is not the teardrop shape we see in cartoons. In reality, small raindrops are nearly perfect spheres, while larger ones flatten out as they fall — shaped more like a hamburger bun than a tear, with a flat bottom and a rounded top. The biggest raindrops can reach about 5mm (0.2 inches) across before air resistance breaks them apart into smaller drops. They fall at a terminal velocity of about 20 mph (32 km/h) depending on their size. Something that seems as simple as a raindrop turns out to be a tiny physics lesson in gravity, surface tension, and fluid dynamics all at once. ☔💧

🌊 In 1969, Ohio's Cuyahoga River actually caught fire — because it was so loaded with industrial waste, oil, and debris that the surface ignited. That moment shocked the nation and became one of the catalysts for the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Water Act of 1972. The Cuyahoga River today is home to thriving fish populations, wildlife, and recreational kayakers. Laws matter. Science matters. Public outrage directed toward positive change matters.
