Burt Reynolds Talks GATOR and THE END at the American Cinematheque

Burt Reynolds looked back at many aspects of his long career, with moderator Jim Hemphill after a 35mm screening of both GATOR (1976) and THE END (1978) at the American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, on Friday, March 23, 2018. Reynolds covered his favorite stuntman, Hal Needham ("There was no one better."), co-stars Jerry Reed and Lauren Hutton, working often in Georgia (he loved the governor - Jimmy Carter) - including a shoot at the state's most dangerous prison while making THE LONGEST YARD - and much more! #burtreynolds

March 13, 2020

Dear American Cinematheque Members and Patrons:

Given the rapidly evolving public health crisis involving COVID-19 (coronavirus) and in consultation with our Board of Directors, the American Cinematheque is suspending all screenings and public events at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica effective as of Friday, March 13, 2020 until further notice. This is in response to the Governor of California’s recommendations that large gatherings of over 250 people should be postponed or canceled and that smaller gatherings in venues that do not allow for social distancing of six feet per person should be postponed or canceled.

Our top priority is the safety of our patrons, members, staff and volunteers, and we will continue to monitor this health crisis, particularly as it impacts the film exhibition industry and the city of Los Angeles.

We know that you were looking forward to screenings advertised on our website. We will do everything possible to reschedule these films in the future.

If you are a current Member of the American Cinematheque, your membership will automatically be extended to cover the period while we are dark.

If you have purchased a ticket for an upcoming show, either online or at one of our theatres:

• All Fandango sales made on or before March 13, 2020 have been refunded automatically in full. The credit can take up to 10 days to appear on your statement.
• If you purchased in-person at either the Egyptian or Aero, you can get a refund at the box office if you bring the ticket to the box office when we re-open for business. Or reach out to [email protected] to set up refund processing over the phone.
• You can accept a voucher as opposed to a refund, or you can not take a refund and the American Cinematheque will accept it as a donation.
• You are welcome to e-mail us with any questions about ticket refunds: [email protected]

We appreciate your support during this crisis, and look forward to welcoming you back to the Egyptian and Aero as soon as possible. Please continue to check our website at: www.americancinematheque.com for updates on our schedule.

Sincerely,

Dennis Bartok
Executive Director (Interim)

The spotlight is on two legendary women film editors with a Fri, Mar 27 - 7:30pm double feature at the Aero Theatre - THE HUSTLER, edited by Dede Allen (1923 - 2010) and THE COLOR OF MONEY (35mm), edited by Thelma Schoonmaker (who visited the Egyptian in January to discuss her career and long-time collaboration with Martin Scorsese, right up to THE IRISH MAN). In THE HUSTLER (1961), Paul Newman is pool shark Eddie Felson, who learns the psychology of winning from a heartless gambler (George C. Scott). Newman reprised the role and won an Oscar for THE COLOR OF MONEY (1986) as Felson returns to the game to show a talented younger player (Tom Cruise) how to work the tables for money. Dede Allen (BONNIE AND CLYDE, REDS, DOG DAY AFTERNOON) got her feature editing start on Robert Wise’s Odds Against Tomorrow. Two years later, she edited Robert Rossen’s The Hustler (1961). 🎞 ✂️

The haves vs. the have-nots, wealthy families influenced by the "American Dream," scenes that take place under coffee tables... the parallels between Akira Kurosawas HIGH AND LOW and Bong Joon Ho's PARASITE are fun to identify. HIGH AND LOW is on the big screen at the Aero Theatre 3/11 at 7:30 PM! Just as PARASITE's house and coffee table were custom-designed and an important part of the story, director Akira Kurosawa and his production designer Yoshirō Muraki meticulously designed the Gondo residence as a symbol of wealth and modernity in the 1963 film HIGH AND LOW. HIGH AND LOW (HEAVEN AND HELL in Japanese) examines class disparity in Japan, just as Bong Joon Ho's Oscar-winning PARASITE took similar themes 56 years later in Korean culture. In 1980s Newfoundland, a teenage girl and an adult man lead separate lives in their small town. While the girl deals with the usual high school issues as any adolescent - finding love, worrying about her grades, establishing her independence, etc. - the man hides secrets far darker and more violent. Their lives circle each other in this small town until fate has them finally meet. Gorgeously filmed and finely crafted, BLACK CONFLUX is an auspicious debut for its writer-director Nicole Dorsey.

Watch BLACK CONFLUX at the Aero Theatre on Saturday, March 8, at 7:30 PM with a special appearance in person from writer-director Nicole Dorsey!

A sign of the attention-starved society that we live in, WHITE LIE is a taut psychological thriller from directors Calvin Thomas and Yonah Lewis that displays the unraveling of a student's fake cancer diagnosis and examines the lengths one would go to obtain sympathy from others. A discussion with Thomas and Lewis will follow the screening of the film!

In our second feature of the night, AND THE BIRDS RAINED DOWN, an elderly trio of men retreat to a forest far away from civilization to live life simply and honestly. When one of them passes away, and two women enter their lives, philosophical conversations about their history ensue. This gentle, thought-provoking drama features subtly heartbreaking performances and gorgeous images to mirror its calm outlook on life.

Watch the double-feature of WHITE LIE & AND THE BIRDS RAINED DOWN at the Aero Theatre on Saturday, March 7, at 7:30 PM with special appearances from writer-directors Calvin Thomas and Yonah Lewis!

How Berlin Winner Eliza Hittman Delivered Brilliant Abortion Drama ‘Never Rarely Sometimes Always’

See Silver Bear-winning NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS for free at the Aero this Thursday, plus a Q&A with its director, Eliza Hittman!

“I don’t think I make crowd-pleasing Grand Jury Prize movies,” Hittman told IndieWire ahead of the premiere. “Everything I do is a little off to the side. I didn’t come here with any expectations. Juries are always wildly unpredictable. I did not make the movie to preach to the choir either. This is an art film, but I knew at some point we would be met with people with different ideas about women’s reproductive rights. I didn’t expect it to be the head of the Berlinale jury!”

The Silver Bear winner explains how she assembled her naturalistic thriller and found her lead in a 19-year-old with no acting experience.

A Japanese dramatic masterwork that inspired some of the most famous filmmakers from Jean-Luc Godard to modern-day masters like Kelly Reichardt and Martin Scorcese, UGETSU is credited with bringing Japanese cinema to Western audiences, as well as being credited with inspiring Reichardt's direction in her latest film, FIRST COW.

The film will be followed by LITTLE BY LITTLE, an ethnographic comedy about an African architect who travels to France to study the construction of its tall buildings but is immediately enraptured by the French culture and all its odd peculiarities.

Watch the double-feature of UGETSU and LITTLE BY LITTLE at the Aero Theatre on Sunday, March 1, at 7:30 PM!

ONLY ONE DAY LEFT!

With the release of MEEK'S CUTOFF, Kelly Reichardt proved she was not content to work within the conventional trappings of the Western genre. Meditative and focused on characterization, her film was nonetheless an acclaimed subversion of Western tropes to focus on the relationship dynamics of historical figures. Her latest film, FIRST COW, is set within that particular period once again to explore the friendship between a cook and an entrepreneur over their burgeoning food business in a small Oregon town. The secret to their success, however, is the suspense that will keep audiences invested in this tale from the Old West.

Watch FIRST COW at the Aero Theatre, TOMORROW, Friday, February 28, at 7:30 PM with a special appearance by director Kelly Reichardt!

A Kelly Reichardt double-feature with the director in person! Considered by critic Brian Tallerico to be one of the most important filmmakers working today, Reichardt launched her career with two wonderful films about people who are not often represented on the big screen. In RIVER OF GRASS, Reichardt's rarely-seen debut feature, a dissatisfied housewife meets a gregarious man in a bar, and both are soon on the lam after assuming they've shot and murdered somebody. In OLD JOY, two friends go on a trip to try to rekindle their friendship, exposing insecurities and fears along the way. Catch the two critically acclaimed films ahead of the premiere of Reichardt's latest feature, FIRST COW!

Hilarity is bound to ensue in this Cold War satire, about the smallest country in the world declaring war on one of the most powerful nations in the world with the aim to lose, and failing spectacularly in those plans. THE MOUSE THAT ROARED boasts several performances from the great Peter Sellers as various characters representing the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, the tiny country in economic shambles. Outrageous and yet straightforward, this comedy articulated the sentiments about the nuclear arms race and the politics of today's society.

what up with all these great movies at 1 pm ? Can't you do a second show later for us peasants with f***ing jobs??
Every Thanksgiving, Aero Theatre in Santa Monica screens Singin' in the Rain. And every year I'm grateful that they show it and go with people special to me. Why do they show it? It's not a Thanksgiving/Holiday movie. Well...I know why I go. This was one of my grandparents all time favorite films. We would sing it to each other and watch it whenever it was on TV. Art is a memory machine- making both new memories and illuminating old, cherished memories. I've also used this movie in my work. One example is a child I worked with who experienced severe anxiety when it rained. We sang and recorded "Singin' in the Rain" together, and then one day.....it rained. I drove to the house and we went outside to sing, laugh and dance in the rain. Just like Gene Kelly. Just like my grandparents. I lost ALL of my grandparents on or around Thanksgiving, so I hope that The Aero never stops showing it, as I know Arthur and Eve Collette are watching it with me every year. "I'm singing in the rain Just singing in the rain What a glorious feelin' I'm happy again I'm laughing at clouds So dark up above The sun's in my heart And I'm ready for love Let the stormy clouds chase Everyone from the place Come on with the rain I've a smile on my face I walk down the lane With a happy refrain Just singin', Singin' in the rain
Out front.
When will Horrorthon tickets go on sale?

Aero theatre practices censorship & is therefore complicit in bringing fascism & thought control to the United States. Why don't you show "1984" & actually sit & watch it. You are a tool of Big Brother.
