uSCEND The ultimate climbing club geared towards promoting the general wellness of the U's climbing communi No former climbing experience needed, everyone is welcome!

The purpose of this club is to provide those attending the University of Utah an outlet for involvement and participation in climbing and climbing related activities including outings, movie screenings, competitions, meetings, instruction and small group courses. The real purpose of the group is to have fun while climbing. We hope to provide a respectful and safe environment to progress the sport

of climbing. However, prior climbing experience, i.e. belaying and spotting, would be good things to know.

Hello Uscenders!

I am wanting to plan a bouldering trip for the group. Are you guys interested in Uscend events during the summer semester? Please give me comments on whether you are interested in Uscend summer activities. Also please comment if you are interested in a potential bouldering trip in the month of June.

Thanks!

Gabby

Hello Uscenders!
Our next outdoor climbing event is going to happen Friday, April 10! We'll be climbing at the Iron Curtain Wall in Parley's Canyon, UT from 12 to 5 pm. If you don't know how to get there, I gave an explanation below, or you can read this link: http://www.mountainproject.com/v/iron-curtain-wall/105739425

Here are some things to know:

Getting There:
Take the 3300 South Exit from I-215, and turn east. Continue through the light at Wasatch Blvd, and then bear left at the first intersection. There is a parking area at the end of the road. From here, walk steeply uphill on a dirt road. Turn left onto a trail towards a distinctive boulder just before a building and cell tower. Head east on a path just before the boulder, and hike down the steep trail to the base of the wall. The Iron Curtain Wall is on the left, and the approach takes about 5-10 minutes from the trailhead. (I will post signs along the trail for the Uscend group to help direct you to the area).

1. Outdoor Adventures does not rent ropes for liability reasons. So this means we will be using our own ropes, which means there are only 6 or so. I will be using all these ropes for top roping, so if you want to lead, you need to bring your own rope. (I have draws and such if those are needed.)

2. Any climber can come, whether they have never climbed before or if they are very experienced. The top roping will range from 5.6 to 5.11c. We don't have many belayers, so if any of you know how to belay and would want to help out with belaying people, that would be great. If you'd like to learn, we can discuss that at the event depending on how busy it is.

3. If you do not have a harness or shoes, go rent them through Outdoor Adventures, it's really cheap and I only have 5 harnesses of select sizes to lend people. (If you bring your UID with you to Outdoor Adventures, you will get an additional 20% off).

4. The event could change due to the weather. I will update everyone if this changes. The weather should be warm enough that the date will not change. We will be staying until at least five. But remember to bring a jacket in case the weather changes. Also don't forget to bring water to stay hydrated and food if you will be hungry. I will not be providing either.

5. If you haven't already signed a waiver at one of our other events, you will need to sign one prior to climbing at the wall here.

6. I have created an event page for climbing at the Iron Curtain Wall on the Uscend page. If you plan on or are thinking about coming, please attend the event on the Uscend page so I can get a headcount on how many people are coming.

I hope everyone tries to come! It's going to be a great Uscend activity and our first for spring semester! So come do some outdoor climbing and meet other climbing partners! As I said earlier, if you know how to belay and want to help out, text me at 801.842.2582. If you have any other questions, you can email or call me.

Thanks!

Gabby Olsen
Uscend President
P.S. if you don't have a ride, post in the event page and figure out some carpooling.

Hello Uscenders!

As you all know, it is getting much warmer outside. This means we are preparing for an outdoor climbing day! In the past I usually plan a spot for the Uscend group to go, and I am still planning on this. Before I set a date I would love to hear suggestions from you guys! Let me know areas that sound fun to you, and if you would like to do a day of trad climbing (top roping), bouldering, and sport climbing (top roping). I will take all of your comments into consideration. Also, if you are willing to help out for the day please contact me via phone (801.842.2582)

Thanks!

Gabby Olsen.

Also, here is a video of bouldering in Little Cottonwood Canyon to start getting you guys psyched for the warm weather and climbing! Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfUS-NYVov4

Hello Uscenders!

Finals are coming up and I wish you all good luck! It is also very close to winter break, and you know what that means?! A climbing trip to Red Rocks, NV! Here are some things you need to know.

First: Before I start trying to organize the trip I would like a headcount. (Even if you are interested, but not sure about the trip, please contact me.)

Second: I want to try and have this trip be from Friday morning (January 2) to Sunday evening (January 4). Dates are subject to change if you guys want it on a different weekend. Please contact me if you would like this changed.

Third: This is the trip plan.
Friday: Leave in the morning at 8 am. (We will figure out carpooling once I get a for sure on the Uscenders attending). Arrive at Red Rocks Campground at 2-3 pm (Nevada time). Set up camp and make lunch. Today we will not be climbing outside, but I will have the Uscend group pay for everyone to go and support the local climbing gym in Nevada: Refuge Climbing Center. We will do this around 6 pm and climb until your fingers can no longer pull on any plastic! After this, you guys are free to do whatever you would like for the night.

Saturday: Wake up and make breakfast around 8 am. Leave for climbing crag at 9 am. CLIMB ALL DAY LONG OUTSIDE! Please pack lunch and lots of water, it will be an awesome day filled with climbing!! Leave crag around 4-5 depending on daylight. Eat dinner at the campground at 6 pm. After dinner, you guys are free for the night.

Sunday: Wake up and make breakfast around 8 am and PACK UP CAMPGROUND. Leave for climbing crag at 10 am. Climb until 2 pm. Please pack lunch and lots of water. After climbing, we will head home with 0 skin left and sore bodies.

Fourth: The club will be covering the costs of: the campground, climbing and Refuge, and possibly gas. (I will find this out once I get a headcount because I have a certain limit I can spend). You guys will be in charge of bringing your own food and camping supplies. (If you don't have camping supplies such as a tent and sleeping bag, you can rent it for extremely cheap through Outdoor Adventures at the University of Utah.

Fifth: IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN JOINING OUR FIRST CLIMBING TRIP, PLEASE JOIN THE EVENT PAGE AND START CONTACTING ME ABOUT IT IMMEDIATELY. I need to reserve the campground a few weeks in advance to make sure we can get it.

Thanks!

Uscend.
