The ‘Burbs arrived on Home Video today in 1989, after a February 17th, theatrical release.
“God I love this street!” I've been living there rent-free for decades.
Sure it features Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommon, and Carrie Fisher, but the unsung star of the movie is the street itself.
Corey Feldman’s immortal line in Joe Dante’s classic could easily refer to the ‘Colonial Street’ filming location on the Universal Studios backlot. I love that street. Through sitcoms and movies, I grew up knowing it - and the town square - as well as any childhood haunt.
It might get redressed, and the houses might get shuffled, but there’s no mistaking that magical nostalgic twinkle that is both everywhere and nowhere at once. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the locations a few times as an adult, and oddly enough, it always felt like coming home again.
