Designed by architect Alexander Aimwell Cantin for Donald Rheem in 1941 in a "Modern Baroque" streamline style, the Orinda Theatre has entertained the region and made memories for 84 years. Slated for demolition in 1984, it was saved through the efforts of preservationists and reopened in 1989, when 2 additional screens were added. The original lobby and main theatre were left intact. The murals i

n the #2 added theatre were saved from the Garden Theatre in San Jose when it was demolished. For a detailed history of Orinda theatre, please visit the following link: http://www.lfef.org/theater-history/

At 11 a.m.!!
(Sunday July 12th) ONE SHOW ONLY
The San Francisco Chronicle's movie pic this week, the rarely shown EL CID (1961), offered in a roadshow presentation at the Orinda Theatre for a single showing, Sunday, July 12th at 11 a.m., is among a handful of epics produced by Samuel Bronston, perhaps his best. The great "El Cid" of Spanish legend is brought to life on the screen by Charlton Heston as Rodrigo Diaz, a knight that knows a divided Spain can not stand as the nation is overrun by the invading Moors.

Martin Scorsese calls it "One of the greatest epic films ever made"

Given further greatness by a remarkable score by Miklós Rózsa, Sophia Loren, Hurd Hatfield, Herbert Lom and Frank Thring enrich the cast. All photographed in 70mm SuperTechnirama, which highlights the stunning vistas of Spain that no longer exists as beautifully today as you see it captured in the film on our giant Orinda Theatre screen. The 6.2 million dollar production (1961 dollars) was directed by Anthony Mann.

Dr. William Bronston, EL CID producer Samuel Bronston's son, was to appear to co-introduce the roadshow presentation with Matias Bombal and share his memories of his father and the production in Spain, but was just hospitalized, and will not be able to appear as scheduled.

The Matías Bombal’s Hollywood Wide Screen Roadshow Series. BIG movies, BIG screen. Presented in the Orinda original 1941 auditorium the second Sunday of each month at 11 a..m.
Presented in original roadshow presentation format with musical overture, intermission, entr'acte music and walk out music.

Projection format: DCP, screened by a qualified projectionist from Local 107 of the IATSE.
$15.00 special roadshow pricing for all seats.
