We are ready to submit it.
The final (for the time being) draft has been finished. Book by Pavel Cerny, Lyrics by Petra Hesova, Music by Daniel Fikejz. We were accepted to the O’Neill Musical Competition.. The competing musicals number to 300. Some by established composers and lyricists . What are the chances?
I would like to enter also other workshops and competitions. Would love to submit it directly to producers. Today, more then ever, the story of the rise of a dictator is doubly important.

Daniel Neer, the erstwhile lyricist who worked with us early in the process of developing of our musical, sent me this wonderful painting by Albert Bloch. It goes perfectly with the theme of CIRCUS WELT.
@Lance Frantzich, a young actor who worked with me on Belz -The Jewish Vaudeville Musical, organized a breakfast on Sunday (my first vegan food) where we for the first time played to invited guests a CD with all the songs from the first half of Circus Welt. Everyone agreed that it sounded damn good. Packages with the libretto and the CD went out to a number of important theatres and several top Broadway producers. Now comes the nail-biting period. Please keep everything crossed.
Watching writer-director-producer Pavel Cerny's liberal adaptation of Leonid Andreyev's 1914 Russian play "He Who Gets Slapped", I was reminded of Ernst Lubitch's darkly comedic 1942 film To Be or Not To Be... Both stories share a startling juxtaposition of moods in which the terror of the Nazi oppression slowly rears its ugly head...Superb cast and Cerny's smart and sensitive direction yield a cerebral experience (Lee Spindle -Frontiers)--Review of the original production of the play that we are basing the musical on.
The first half of the musical is nearing completion. Most of the songs are written, now still left to complete the book and write the music for the circus orchestra.Then I will need all your fingers crossed that we succeed with our application to be accepted to next year's Sundance theater workshop. Most of the Tony winning or nominated plays and musicals of the last decade originated at Sundance. Is it easy to be accepted? NO.But hope springs eternal.

The collaborative work on the musical version of CIRCUS WELT is chugging along. We are concentrating at this moment on finishing all the songs and re-writing the dialogues of the first half, as we would like to enter it in some workshops (hey Sundance, did you hear?)

Well, things have changed since my last missive.. After 6 months of working on the project, my lyricist was offered a well paid job with a famous US composer and quit our musical. Need a fast and equally excellent replacement, who would be enthusiastic about the play CIRCUS WELT (watch it on youtube) and who would he would be willing to stick with working on it for the rather long period of time a Broadway style musical takes to develop.Please contact me if you can recommend someone.NEED YOUR HELP on this one.
Working on songs 3 and 4, lyrics for 5 already written..Have lots of notes about changes in the book, but we decided to wait till all the songs are written.This is exciting.
Finally we have a team! Besides my book, CIRCUS WELT (the musical) will have lyrics by DANIEL NEER (lyricist, writer, director--and also an internationally recognized opera singer) and music by the Czech composer DAN FIKEJZ, who wrote several musicals (one of them is running in Sweden for many years already), music for films and TV, lots of scenic music for the leading Czech theatres, and has a number of CDs with his songs out.

It takes usually several years for a musical to be written, workshopped and finally produced.
BMI Musical Workshop in NYC sent out an ad for a lyricist for CIRCUS WELT (or is it CIRCUS WORLD?). Within a couple of hours I received response from a number of excellent submissions. Will I finally find the right person who can translate the dialogues into lyrics? How will I pick?
Everything put on hold while I am working on the production of BELZ-THE JEWISH VAUDEVILLE MUSICAL (opens March 2 at the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks). But I am still looking for a great lyricist and a composer.

After an unsuccessful attempt of working with a composer, I am searching again for a composer and or lyricist who would have the right combination for this time period and style.
I have gotten a large number of submissions for composers (and less for lyricists) for CIRCUS WELT-THE MUSICAL this time around. Judging from the samples they sent me many are very gifted. Let's see if we can get this show on the road.

Out of the two finalists for the composer of music for CIRCUS WELT The Musical, one got a scholarship to study composition in Berlin, the other signed up for 4 Disney and Pixar films...That's what happens when you pick the best. I need new suggestions both for COMPOSERS and for LYRICISTS.
Several composers from all over the world have asked to be considered for this musical. Many of them seem to be very good. Decisions, decisions.
