PAINT ME A ROAD OUT OF HERE + Q&A | PRESENTED BY MISS VIDEO 4 U (2024) - In 1971, artist Faith Ringgold created a monumental painting “For the Women’s House” for the women incarcerated at Rikers Island jail. Fifty years later, artist Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter, who gave birth in prison 15 years ago, finds herself banding together with an eclectic group of activists, politicians, artists, corrections officers and Faith Ringgold herself to free the artwork with the ultimate goal of freeing the women. Paint Me a Road Out of Here is a wild tale of the painting’s whitewashed journey and the two artists who challenged the same powerful and oppressive institutions, a half century apart, with their artwork, their voices and their shared, persistent goals.

ROXANE MESQUIDA @ ROXY CINEMA - On the occasion of the New York release of Her Will Be Done (2026), this four-film series celebrates the remarkable career of French actress Roxane Mesquida, whose fearless performances have taken her from the provocative cinema of Catherine Breillat to the exuberant q***r universe of Gregg Araki — and now to Julia Kowalski’s atmospheric new feature.

The series brings together Her Will Be Done (2026) with two essential collaborations between Mesquida and Breillat: Fat Girl (2001), an uncompromising coming-of-age film about two sisters confronting s*xuality, desire, and gendered power dynamics; and S*x Is Comedy (2002), a provocative, darkly comic look at the making of an intimate s*x scene, loosely inspired by Breillat’s own experiences directing Fat Girl. Together, the films offer a glimpse of Mesquida’s early work and Breillat’s radical approach to s*xuality, performance, and the relationship between director and actor.

Fat Girl — Catherine Breillat, 2001, 86 min. 9/24 + 9/27

Twelve-year-old Anaïs is fat. Her sister, fifteen-year-old Elena, is a beauty. While the girls are on vacation with their parents, Anaïs tags along as Elena explores the dreary seaside town. Elena meets Fernando, an Italian law student; he seduces her with promises of love, and the ever watchful Anaïs bears witness to the corruption of her sister’s innocence.

S*x Is Comedy — Catherine Breillat, 2002, 95 min. 9/24

Once again exploring her signature obsessions, Breillat uses this metafictional format to investigate the ethical responsibilities of the artist, the messy logistics of running a set, and the slippery nature of realism, as applied to one of filmmaking’s most challenging ordeals: the simulated s*x scene.

Kaboom — Gregg Araki, 2011, 86 min. 9/24 + 10/3

A wild, witty and s*x-drenched horror-comedy thriller, KABOOM tells the story of Smith (Thomas Dekker), an ambis*xual 18-year-old college freshman who stumbles upon a monstrous conspiracy in a seemingly idyllic Southern California seaside town.

Her Will Be Done — Julia Kowalski, 2026, 95 min. 9/25 + 9/27

CINEMA TEHRAN PRESENTS CAIRO STATION + ORDERLY DISORDERLY (1958) - Cinema Tehran presents Cairo Station (1958), the masterpiece that established Youssef Chahine’s s international reputation. Though initially a commercial failure in Egypt, the film would become one of the most influential and celebrated works in all of Arab cinema.

The director himself stars as Kenawi, a disabled newspaper hawker whose obsession with a sultry drink seller (Hind Rostom, known as the “Marilyn Monroe of Arabia”) leads to tragedy of operatic proportions on the streets of Cairo. Blending elements of neorealism with provocative noir-melodrama, Cairo Station is a work of raw populist poetry that explores the individual’s search for a place in Egypt’s new postrevolutionary political order.

Preceded by:
Orderly or Disorderly (Abbas Kiarostami, 1981, 18 min.)
The first shot shows students descending a staircase in calm, orderly fashion, then the second details the same action as a chaotic rush. Separated by slates and director Abbas Kiarostami’s voice intoning, “Sound, camera,” subsequent sequences describe the same dichotomous behavior in a schoolyard, on a school bus, and in the haphazard traffic of Tehran. Kiarostami described this as “a truly educational film,” but it plays more like a quirky philosophic aside.

FAST FOOD NATION 35MM + Q&A (2016) - For ten years, beginning in 2001, artist and filmmaker K8 Hardy documented her daily outfits on video according to a very simple set of self-imposed rules. Over an eleven-year period, until the camera broke, she captured these outfits—and outfitting—on a fairly consistent, if not daily basis, using the same “sh*tty” mini-DV camera, filming in an ever-changing series living spaces and art studios in New York. The result of this disciplined process is the fascinating Outfitumentary (2016), a thrilling evolutionary document of life and living, fashion and persona in 21st Century New York; an episodic first-person account of a young, le***an feminist dressed and styled in her “coming of age;” and an examination of coded fashion statements and subcultural communication in the pre-instagram era.

Post-screening Q&A with artist/filmmaker K8 Hardy, moderated by art critic, Johanna Fateman!
