Remembering Rob Loscalzo 🎬🎞
I was very saddened to learn that Rob Loscalzo passed away on Saturday after his battle with cancer.
Rob and I spent many long days together at NYU film school, scouting locations across the city, running camera tests, and chasing the perfect shot. He had a deep love for cinematography and a technical mastery that impressed everyone who worked with him. Rob admired the greats -- Gordon Willis, Owen Roizman, John A. Alonzo, Jordan Cronenweth, Conrad Hall, Haskell Wexler, Miroslav Ondříček and especially John Bailey, and he studied their work with the seriousness of someone who truly respected the craft. He wasn’t just learning cinematography; he was living it. I will always remember those early days of experimentation, the conversations about lenses and light, and Rob’s steady dedication to getting the image just right. He was a true craftsman and a good friend. Together we made my thesis film Rain, which is still today one of the only films ever shot at NYU Grad Film in 35mm. Many people working with us on that film are leading cinematography professionals in the industry today, including John Pirozzi, Luke Geissbühler, David Emmerichs, Joe Foley, and Adam Kane.
Rest in peace, Rob. Your light lives on in every frame you inspired. 🎥
