We have a very special movie for you this week: COOKIE QUEENS, a 2026 American documentary film directed and produced by Alysa Nahmias, which debuted at Sundance Film Festival and was an award-winner at SXSW Film Festival.

It's Girl Scout Cookie season, and four tenacious girls strive to be a top-selling "Cookie Queen," navigating an $800 million business in which innocence and ambition collide. It explores the joys, pains, and pressures of the Girl Scout Cookies season, but make no mistake, this documentary is for boys and girls of all ages, parents, grandparents, and community members who are passionate about supporting young people.

💫See THE MAGIC FARAWAY TREE this week at The Bijou!🍃

A movie is the perfect bookend to a lovely summer vacation, don't you think? We have plenty of matinees, including $6 weekday shows, and the popcorn will be fresh and hot for you!

SYNOPSIS: Adapted from Enid Blyton's beloved classic novel (The Faraway Tree), the film THE MAGIC FARAWAY TREE centers on Polly (Claire Foy), Tim (Andrew Garfield), and their three children -- a modern family forced to relocate to the remote English countryside. As they adapt to their new lives, the children discover a magical tree and its extraordinary and eccentric residents, including treasured characters Moonface (Nonso Anozie), Silky (Nicola Coughlan), Dame Washalot (Jessica Gunning), and Saucepan Man (Dustin Demri-Burns). At the top of the tree, they are transported to spectacular, fantastical lands, and through the joys and challenges of their adventures, the family learns to reconnect and value each other for the first time in years.

Morning 🌞

I did some 'ciphering and in June, July, and August the theater has been closed less than a total of 10 days. In a time when small, independent movie theaters are open just 2-3 days a week we have proudly been open 6-7 days a week nearly all summer long!

That being said, today we are closed to enjoy a little adventure time as a family, but we'll be back at it for SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY on Tuesday! We'll be showing SPIDER-MAN at least through Sunday, perhaps with an encore show or two next week if demand is still there.

Next up: THE MAGIC FARAWAY TREE (rated PG) and COOKIE QUEENS (NR - family-friendly documentary). We hope to 💙See You At The Bijou!💙

Q: What's a sign that a movie theater with strong values for sustainability has welcomed lots of patrons this summer?

A: They had to order a second trash can for curbside pick up.

It's true. Even our wee little theater with a penchant for living lightly on the earth produces trash. Can you help us reduce the amount of single use products entering the landfill from The Bijou?

🌳Bring ANY bowl or bucket for popcorn! It does not need to be a theater bucket! Bring an ice cream bucket. A Tupperware. A beautifully oiled, antique wooden bowl. Our team are experts at estimating the size of your container and will charge you appropriately, less a 10% discount.

🦋 Bring in a cup with a lid (!) for your soda. Got one of those huge theater cups but only want it half full? Cool. We'll charge you for a medium and give ya 10% off. Have a favorite insulated water bottle and want some sparkling soda water? It's free. Avoiding HFCS? Try soda water with a splash of lemonade. Yum!

🌞We buy candy in bulk, giving you the choice to put a sweet treat right on top of your popcorn (the low waste option) or in a small compostable bag. Buying candies in bulk is very cost effective, but it's also just fun.

🌎 We serve Iowa-grown popcorn that is grown by Farmer Jim who lives near Cedar Falls. If your eyes tend to be larger than your stomach, buy a small or medium popcorn and refill your container during the movie for 50% off! It's more economical and we aren't wasting food.

🐓Got some leftover popcorn after the movie that you don't want to take home? Dump your bowl into the compost bucket on your way out the door. Our 9 laying hens LOVE to snack on stale popcorn.

🐛 If you forget your container, we have compostable popcorn bags, candy bags, and cups, lids, and straws for your snacks. Just know they are often not compostable in backyard systems and enter the landfill just like other non-compostable items.

🐝Admire the mural on the West side of The Bijou before or after the show. It depicts a native Iowa tallgrass prairie in summertime, and it's kind of like a nature seek-and-find with lots of flora and fauna tucked into the scene. If you take a selfie, tag us!
