UWM Union Cinema

UWM Union Cinema Milwaukee's premiere art house venue for foreign, experimental, documentary, environmental, local, a All films are free and open to everyone.

For Fall semester 2022, the Union Cinema will be screening films in Peck School of the Arts' Fine Art Cinema, in Mitchell Hall B91. The UWM Union Cinema is an inviting 300 seat movie theatre that screens unique and well-loved films for students, faculty, and community members within the Milwaukee area. A gathering place for anyone with a love of adventure, comedy, film, and history, the UWM Union

Cinema has movies for everyone. Milwaukee premiers of highly acclaimed independent films occur weekly alongside popular Hollywood films and informative documentaries. Our film series include International Cinema, Documentary Frontiers, Cinema Classics, Hollywood Films, Experimental Tuesdays, Locally Grown, and Share the Earth Environmental Films. We are also privileged to host many annual and semi-annual film festivals including the Annual Festival of Films in French, Student Film and Video Festival, and many many more! Not only do we have a stunning lineup of films each week, but we also have the unique capability to screen 16mm and 35mm film prints. This means that many of our films are shown in their truly breathtaking, analog form. Watching films in this form is a visual delight that is becoming rarer and rarer as many movie theatres convert entirely to digital projection. Popcorn, soda, tea, coffee, and soda are sold from thirty minutes before to twenty minutes after each film begins. Don't forget that we're on Twitter: https://twitter.com/UWMUnionCinema

TONIGHT 7PM!

Join us at the Union Cinema at 7pm!!!

One of the myths surrounding the creation of Vietnam involves a fight between two dragons whose intertwined bodies fell into the South China Sea and formed Vietnam’s curving S-shaped coastline. Influential feminist theorist and filmmaker Trinh T. Minh-ha’s lyrical film essay commemorating the 40th anniversary of the end of the war draws inspiration from ancient legend and from water as a force evoked in every aspect of Vietnamese culture. Minh-ha’s classic Surname Viet Given Name Nam (1989) used no original footage shot in the country; in Forgetting Vietnam images of contemporary life unfold as a dialogue between land and water—the elements that form the term “country”. Fragments of text and song evoke the echoes and traces of a trauma of international proportions. The encounter between the ancient as related to the solid earth, and the new as related to the liquid changes in a time of rapid globalization, creates a third space of historical and cultural re-memory—what local inhabitants, immigrants and veterans remember of yesterday’s stories to comment on today’s events.
