TROOPERS RESCUE ABANDONED BEAR CUB ALONG I-78
Union Township, Pennsylvania
In a truly unusual turn of events, troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police Troop "B" Perryville Station launched a successful rescue mission on April 1, 2026, saving a lone, vulnerable bear cub found along a major interstate.
The Roadside Call
At approximately 1:37 p.m., troopers received a report of a bear cub in a ditch near milepost 12.2 on Interstate 78 East in Union Township. Given the busy traffic and the cub’s apparent age, immediate action was necessary.
Safe and Sound
Upon arrival at the scene, the responding troopers confirmed the report and discovered the small, visibly distressed cub alone and without a mother in sight. The cub, which appeared to be just a few months old, was in clear need of assistance.
The troopers were able to safely and gently secure the cub. The rescue was handled with care, ensuring the safety of both the animal and the responding officers. The cub was then carefully transported back to the Perryville Barracks.
A New Beginning
Thanks to the swift, careful response of the Troop "B" Troopers, the cub is now receiving the professional attention he needs. Following his stop at the barracks, the cub was officially turned over to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for proper care and evaluation.
The DEP will assess the cub's health and will determine the best course of action for his long-term rehabilitation and potential eventual release back into a safe, appropriate habitat.
"This was a sensitive operation, and we are grateful our troopers were able to respond quickly to ensure this young animal was not harmed," said a State Police spokesperson.
The successful rescue highlights the wide range of calls that state troopers handle and ensures this tiny member of Pennsylvania's wildlife has a second chance.
