The first amendment to the United States Constitution is arguably the most important, it is the amendment upon which democracy is predicated. It protects the free exchange of ideas, without which democracy could not truly exist. The exact wording of the amendment is, "congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
In principle the first amendment protects the private citizen from the threat of governmental tyranny; but the implications of the first amendment go much further. Ultimately the ratification of the Bill of Rights in 1789 predetermined America's future as a safe place for diversity. America developed a democratic tradition that welcomed criticism of government and created channels for citizens to voice their outrage. But not for everyone.
Unfortunately the American democratic tradition silenced the voice of the most vulnerable. An example of democratic silencing can be seen in the history of voter restriction. Originally the constitution allowed each state to determine voter eligibility. The result? Only property owning adult white men were able to vote in most states. 6% of the population was eligible to vote in the first election. Of course voter restriction is problematic, but ultimately it's indicative of a much greater issue - it underscores a democracy where the voices of some are valued more then others.
The American democratic tradition has been guilty of placing a disproportionate amount of value on the voices of some based on the gender, race, or wallet attached to the voice. Ironically America's written commitment to defend the basic personal rights of its citizens served as beacon of hope to those whose rights were being actively denied. These persons voiced their outrage through channels that were not created for them, and criticized government although their critiques were unwelcome. Come and hear their voices; October 16th 2016 - PROTESTING : The American Way

Who are we?
Ephesus is a discussion oriented organization. We take and examine divisive issues in order to provide insight into different perspectives. Our goal is to explore our differences in order to discover our similarities.
Why the name?
Ephesus was an ancient city whose ruins are located in modern day Turkey. It saw the Greco-Persian wars, Alexander the Great, Cleopatra and Antony, the rise and fall of Rome, Constantine of the Byzantine Empire, and the Ottoman Empire. Ephesus' location, nestled between a fertile valley and the sea, made it a centre of commerce. Along with trade came the exchange of ideas, which made Ephesus a hub of philosophy, education, and art.
What to expect?
All of our events are discussion oriented which means that your voice is important. We'll be taking a close look at hot-button issues to challenge the preconceived notions that shape our world view. Our aim is to be rooted in humility, Informed by history, and ultimately impacted by the suffering of others.
