Security guard Amin Abdullah was killed on May 18, 2026, while confronting two teenage gunmen during a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, where about 140 children were inside.

Authorities said Abdullah, 51, exchanged gunfire with the attackers and helped trigger a lockdown that prevented more deaths.

“It could have been much worse had it not been for the brave actions of Amin Abdullah,” CAIR official Edward Ahmed Mitchell said.

Two other men, Mansour Kaziha, 78, and Nadir Awad, 57, were also killed while trying to stop the attack.

Police said the suspects, ages 17 and 18, later died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, and investigators are treating the case as a hate crime.

The attack adds to national concerns over violence targeting religious communities, with officials comparing the threat level to prior hate-driven attacks on houses of worship.

Community members, Muslim advocacy groups, and local officials praised Abdullah’s actions, while calling for accountability, stronger security, and action against anti-Muslim hate.
