Roxie Theatre - Los Angeles

Roxie Theatre - Los Angeles Advocating for the reuse of the Roxie on Broadway. Seating 1600, the Roxie was the last theatre built in the Broadway Theatre district in 1931.

Designed by architect J.M. Cooper, it sits on the site of the razed Quinn's Superba Theatre. It's Art Deco charm makes it different from the rest of the bunch on Broadway - and one of the largest reasons for saving. The Roxie was equipped for live stage performances (including a pipe organ), but its long, narrow auditorium was intended primarily for motion picture display. In the 1980's it ran as

a Spanish language house, until it closed for good in 1989. Today the lobby serves as retail, while the auditorium sits dark the balcony still has seats but the main floor seats have been removed. The iconic red ticketbooth is preserved sitting on the main floor in the auditorium as well.

The Roxie Theatre, 518 S. Broadway --
We're in the house left (north) side of the balcony lobby looking toward Broadway admiring the circus paint job. The room with the yellow sign above it is the men's room, facing out to the street. The lit doorway to its left was evidently either an office or storage. Photo: Hunter Kerhart - 2014. Keep up with Hunter's latest investigations: www.southonspring.com

It's unknown what the next chapter will be for the 1931 vintage Roxie but with some stage upgrades and a new paint job on that terrific deco proscenium it would have the beginnings of being a cute little playhouse. The Roxie Theatre, 518 S. Broadway --
Well, it's a big theatre, isn't it? Sorry there isn't a seat for you up here -- the only seats are four down on the main floor in row two. It's currently patiently waiting, with retail in the lobby, for a grand rebirth. Photo: Hunter Kerhart - 2014. Keep up with Hunter's latest investigations: www.southonspring.com

We hear something is going on at the Roxie. Anyone have any details? Hoping it's redevelopment, but nothing has been confirmed.

Anyone have an update on Cliftons? Looks like they got their windows in a few months ago, but can't find anything past that. Is the restoration complete?

Yes, we're on top of the building looking over the edge -- down the length of the United Artists' vertical sign. The dark area just above the checkerboard sidewalk is the top of the marquee. Photo; Hunter Kerhart - October 2012 - www.facebook.com/HKphotographyLA
